OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team allowed three goals against in the second period in a 5-2 loss to the Western Mustangs Saturday afternoon at the Campus Ice Centre.
Tied 2-2 after 20 minutes, the Mustangs made a goaltending change replacing starter Shelby Ryan for Katie Jacobs that seemed to spark the entire lineup. Western would go on to score three unanswered goals in the period, taking a 5-2 lead into the final frame.
Jacobs would end up stopping all 12 shots she faced, earning her fourth win of the season.
UOIT and Western traded goals in the opening period with
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) and
Nicole LoPresti (Hamilton, Ont.) scoring for the Ridgebacks.
Ball opened up scoring for UOIT hammering home a one-timer after being set up by LoPresti in the slot.
Kassidy Ford (Gananoque, Ont.) picked up the second assist, marking her first point as a Ridgeback.
Trailing 2-1 late in the first, LoPresti forced a turnover and found herself on a breakaway from centre ice. Although Ryan was able to get a piece of the puck, she slid back in the net with the puck to give LoPresti her second point of the game.
April Clark and Brianna Iazzolino scored two goals apiece for Western, as they snapped a three-game losing streak.
Tori Campbell (Saskatoon, Sask.) faced a season-high 43 shots against and made 38 saves. With
Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) and Brian Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) out of the lineup with injuries, Kassia Almeida joined the team in a back-up role.
