Capers hold off Axewomen's third quarter rally

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axewomen (0-4) faced off against the Cape Breton Capers (1-3) to kick off the Axewomen's CIS Shoot for the Cure weekend. Despite a dominant, double-double performance by Subway Player of the Game Alexandra Berry, 20 points and 16 rebounds, the Axewomen fell 55-41 to the Capers.

It was a slow start to the game for both teams and Cape Breton held the slight 11-09 edge at the end of one quarter of action. With seven minutes remaining in the second half, Acadia put the Capers into a bonus situation. Despite the foul trouble it was the battle on the glass that would dictate the lead. The Axewomen were out-rebounded 24-16 at the end of the half resulting in a 14 point deficit, 15-29 going into the third.

Cape Breton was led by Alison Keough in the first half with 12 points and five rebounds in 16 minutes of action. Keough would be the eventual Subway Player of the Game for the Capers, finishing with 16 points and eight rebounds. Alexandra Berry led the way for Acadia with six points and six rebounds at the half.

It was a renewed Acadia team that came out to start the second half, beginning on an 8-0 to start the quarter and closing the lead to six. Berry exploded for 12 points in the third quarter and the Axewomen closed the gap to as close as four, but trailed 35-44 entering the final frame.

Jalynn Skeir poured in 15 points for the Capers while Hannah Brown added nine points.

Lauren Joudrey had five points for the Axewomen while Tamara Dondi added four.

Cape Breton will stop in Halifax on their way home to take on the Saint Mary's Huskies in another four point matchup and will finish off their schedule before the break against UNB at home the following Friday.

Meanwhile, the Axewomen will play host to Dalhousie tomorrow to wrap up the CIS Shoot for the Cure weekend and then host Saint Mary's next Thursday at home to conclude their pre-holiday schedule.
