NO. 4 BLUES MAUL LIONS

A solid team effort helped the No. 4 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team to a dominant 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-19) victory over the York Lions on Sunday afternoon at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

With the win, the Blues improve to a perfect 10-0 and remain atop the OUA East standings.

Fourth-year setter Madelyn Mandryk paced the Blues with 39 assists, averaging 13.00 per set, while also adding eight digs in the victory.

Offensively, outside hitters Alina Dormann, Anna Feore and Caleigh Cruickshank led Toronto. Dormann, a first-year right side from Ottawa, led all players with 14 points, notching nine kills, three aces and two blocks, while also adding 10 digs.

Feore, a second-year left side from Stratford, recorded a game-high 12 kills and team-high 16 digs, earning Varsity Blues player of the match honours. A fourth-year veteran from Etobicoke, Cruickshank had nine kills, two blocks and eight digs on the day.

Fellow veteran Bojana Radan added six kills, two blocks and four digs, with libero Denise Wooding tallying 14 digs in the win.

Up 16-13 at the first set technical timeout, the Blues pulled away with a 9-3 streak, highlighted by some great serving from Dormann and a nice kill from Feore, to take the first set 25-16.

The Blues dominated the second set, building an early 11-4 advantage. Two straight kills from Cruickshank gave Toronto a 16-7 lead at the break. Radan led the way for the remainder of the set as Toronto took a 2-0 match lead, 25-18.

York got out to a 4-1 lead in the third but the Blues battled back and a kill from rookie Anna Licht put Toronto up 16-11 at the technical timeout. Toronto closed out their second win in as many days with a final kill from Feore, 25-19.

Cadence Currie and Celeste Witzell led the Lions with six points each, while Sarah Williams had a game-high 17 digs in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, January 23 as they travel to Waterloo to take on the Warriors (4-8). The game will be streamed live, starting at 6 p.m.
