VANCOUVER - A big second-half comeback by the UBC Thunderbirds was spoiled in the dying seconds of the game on Saturday night, as the Saskatchewan Huskies' Jamelle Barrett scored eight points in the final 1:11 of the fourth to give his side a 97-96 win at War Memorial Gym.
After Josh Whyte missed both free throws with nine seconds remaining and the 'Birds up 96-95, a lengthy scramble for the rebound saw several players get a touch on the ball until Rejean Chabot finally wrestled it away from the crowd and drew a foul from Whyte with less than four seconds left.
Chabot then hit both his free throws to put the Huskies up 97-96, and a last-second layup attempt in heavy traffic by UBC's Melvyn Mayott bounced harmlessly off the rim to give Saskatchewan the win.
Whyte led the T-Birds with 23 points and six assists while chipping in eight rebounds.
Next week the T-Birds will be at Trinity Western to take on the Spartans, arguably their biggest rivals in the conference. They will meet on October 29 and 30 in Langley, at 8 and 7 p.m. respectively. The Huskies head back to Saskatchewan for their home opener against Victoria next week.

Dinos-Vikes Game Stats

VICTORIA - The UVic Vikes men's basketball could not close out the weekend sweep of the Calgary Dinos, as a seven-point fourth quarter lead slipped away and the visitors prevailed 83-74. Both teams are now 1-1.
Tyler Fidler spearheaded the Calgary comeback by scoring 10 of his game-high 20 points in the final frame. The 6-foot-9 guard overturned a one-time 17-point deficit, giving the Dinos their first lead since the opening minutes.
Fidler, who also hauled in 13 'boards, was one of four Dinos scorers in double figures. Last night's leading scorer, Andrew McGuinness netted 15, rookie Philip Labongo came off the bench to score 12, and Dustin Reding posted 11.
UVic's Ryan MacKinnon finished with 16.
The Vikes will now travel to the prairies to face the defending CIS champion Saskatchewan Huskies. UVic defeated the Huskies 82-54 in their regular season matchup a year ago.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Trinity Western Spartans completed the weekend sweep of the host Lethbridge Pronghorns with 98-82 victory.
Tristan Smith led the Spartans and all scorers with 31 points on a stellar 9 of 14 shooting, including 5 for 7 from behind the arc. Tyrell Mara and Jacob Doerkson also hit double digits with 22 and 15 respectively.
Junior College transfer Zach Humphrey continues to turn heads, scoring a Pronghorn team high 21 points, hitting for 5 threes himself. Randy Davis chipped in with 17 points and another Junior College transfer Abner Kamps was a rebound short of a double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
The Horns will head out on the road next weekend, traveling to Calgary to face the Calgary Dinos. The Spartans will return home to prepare for their home opener next weekend versus the UBC Thunderbirds.

BRANDON, MB - Following Friday's final-second buzzer-beater, fans in Brandon were expecting another great game between the Bobcats and Thompson Rivers Wolfpack. The two teams delivered, although the outcome was slightly different.
The Bobcats came back from a first-half deficit for the second night in a row to win 88-80. Leading scorer for the Bobcats was Kyle Vince (23 points, 8 rebounds). O'Brian Wallace contributed with 19 points, and Jordan Reaves pitched in with 14 points.
Leading scorer for the Wolfpack was Kevin Pribilsky with 18 points, followed by 17 points from Chas Kok. Greg Stewart contributed with double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds).
The Bobcats swept the opening weekend series improving their record to 2-0, while Thompson Rivers falls to 0-2.
