Cougars hang on for 66-64 win over Calgary

The No. 3-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team pulled out a 66-64 win over the Calgary Dinos on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

A pair of Lindsay Ledingham free throws broke a 62-62 tie with 40 seconds remaining, putting the Cougars into the lead for good. Calgary came to within one after two free throws by Alex Cole with 12 seconds left, but weren't able to draw even.

The game featured 14 tie scores and 14 lead changes as the two teams battled back and forth all night long. The biggest lead of the night for Regina came with just under two minutes left, as a Gabrielle Gheyssen three-pointer gave the Cougars a four-point advantage.

Ledingham was an impressive 11-for-14 from the free throw line and led all players with 19 points for the Cougars. The third-year forward also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season.

Gheyssen was 4-for-6 from the three-point line and ended up with 16 points, while Joanna Zalesiak matched her with 16 and added a game-high five assists.

Calgary, which led by nine points early in the second quarter, were led by Cole's 16 points and 12 rebounds. Megan Lang had 13 points for the Dinos, while Ashley Hill ended up with 11.

The win improves Regina's record to 8-1 on the season, while the Dinos fall to 3-6.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. at the CKHS.
