Huskies fall to McGill and Laval in day one of Interlock volleyball

(Halifax, NS)--The Saint Mary's University Huskies co-host's of this weekends Quebec Interlock volleyball, lost to McGill 3-0 and Laval 3-1 to close off day one of competition.
Game one saw the Huskies face a tough CIS No. 7 ranked McGill Martlets, who swept SMU 3-0 (25-15, 23-12, 25-18).  McGill doubled up the Huskies 4-7 in first quarter kills, using four, five, and six point runs to jump out to a 16-4 run before SMU used their own four point run to bring the score 16-8. McGill closed out the set on a 9-7 spurt, taking it 25-12.
A closer second set saw it 8-7 McGill early on before the Martlets ended the set on a 18-5 run, taking the set 25-12.  A 4-0 McGill lead increased to 8-5 to open the third set. A 6-2 run had McGill up 14-7 when a four point SMU run drew the Huskies within three, 14-11.
Both teams traded points to 16-13. Another McGill 6-2 run drew the SMU deficit to 22-15. The Martlets controlled the final points, taking the set 25-18.
Montreal native Emilie Matte de Grasse lead all hitters on the night with 13.0 total points.
Erin Smith (Moncton, NB) paced the Huskies with 5.0 total points. Lindsay Donovan (London, ON) and Jamie Rourke (Mission, BC) had 4.0 total points apiece while Maddie Clarke (Ottawa, ON) finished with 3.0 total points.
McGill held advantages in kills (33-14), aces (33-14), digs (65-59) and total points (47.0-19.0).
Saint Mary's battled the Laval Rouge et Or in game two Friday night losing in four sets (25-14, 21-25, 25-11, 25-21).
Jade Fortin (Alma, QC) paced all hitters with 17.0 total points for the Rouge er Or. Montreal native Katia Villeneuve had 13.0 total points for Laval.
Erica Dowling (Lower Sackville' NS) had 13.0 total points for SMU, adding 12 kills from the left side. Maddie Clarke (Ottawa, ON) finished with 11.0 total points and Celine Selby (Weyburn, SK) chipped in 24 aces for SMU.
A 10-7 Dowling kill had SMU in the battling in the set, as a 7-6 run had SMU trailing 16-14. Laval quickly used a 8-0 spurt to win the set 25-14. A very close second set had ties of 1-1, 4-4, 5-5, 14-14 and 18-18. A four point SMU run saw Saint Mary`s lead 22-18. Two quick Laval points cut SMU`s cushion in half to 22-20 before a 3-1 SMU run won the set 25-21.
Trading points in the third set saw the Rouge et Or hold a slim 11-10 lead before going on a 14-1 run to win the set 25-11.
Down 9-3 in the fourth set, SMU`s five point run brought the Huskies to with in one, 9-8. Using a 9-4 run, Laval jumped out to a 18-12 lead and controlled the set down the stretch, winning 25-21.
Laval held advantages in kills (46-37),  aces (42-35), digs (70-64) and total points (62.0-47.0)
Both losses drop SMU to 1-4 on the year.

In other action at the Homburg Center, Acadia's second game of the day saw the Axewomen sweep the CIS No. 8 Sherbrooke Vert & Or 3-0 (28-26, 25-23, 25-20). Acadia held advantages in kills (41-32), aces (40-32), digs (58-55) and total points (53.0-44.0). Carlotta Frasca (Rome, Italy) paced Acadia with 15.0 total points on 13 kills while Sarah-Jeanne Meunier (St-Jean-sur le Richelieu, QC) had 15.0 total points for Sherbrooke.
