VANCOUVER - Fourth-year guard Nathan Yu stole the show on seniors night at UBC by leading the Thunderbirds to a 96-83 win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Saturday, with 25 points off the bench.

Yu wasn't the only UBC reserve to make an impact on Saturday. The T-Birds got 46 points from their bench, compared to 10 for Thompson Rivers. Melvyn Mayott chipped in 15 points and three assists in his 24 minutes of action. Josh Whyte had seven steals to go with his 16 points and seven assists.

The WolfPack's Greg Stewart extended his double-double streak to seven games to end his CIS career, scoring 27 points and pulling down 16 rebounds in a losing effort. Chas Kok poured in 21 points for the visitors.

At 20-2, UBC is in first place and in control of its own destiny next weekend. The WolfPack finish the year out of the playoff picture at 4-20.

Regardless of their results in Victoria, the T-Birds will host at least a first-round playoff match-up at War Memorial Gym. The first round gets underway on the week of February 25, with exact dates yet to be determined.

SASKATOON - On the strength of 33 points by Canada West leading scorer Jamelle Barrett the #3 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies swept the visiting Regina Cougars 110-83 Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Barrett’s 33 points was a game-high. Duncan Jones added another 23 points for the Huskies shooting four three-pointers in the game. Two more Huskies were in double-digits – Michael Lieffers scored 15 and had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Paul Gareau was the best on the night for the Cougars with 29 points. Marek Downarowicz added another 15 and Jeff Lukomski scored 13.Gareau also chipped in on the boards with nine rebounds.

With the win, the Huskies move 18-4 and sit in third place in the Canada West standings. The Cougars fall to 12-10.

The Huskies hit the road to face the Calgary Dinos next weekend in the final regular season games, while Regina returns home to host the Manitoba Bisons.

#4 Trinity Western 103 Manitoba 76

WINNIPEG - Despite a valiant third quarter comeback attempt by the Manitoba Bisons they still fell to the CIS #3-ranked Trinity Western Spartans 103-76 on Saturday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

The Bisons fell to 9-13, with Trinity Western improving to 21-3 in their final game of the season, good for first place.

Sean Maxwell had 33 points for Manitoba. For the Spartans, Calvin Westbrook and Tristan Smith led the way, each scoring 24 points.    

The Bisons will try to redeem themselves next weekend when they travel to Regina to take on the Cougars.

Alberta 78 Calgary 68

Dinos-Golden Bears Stats

EDMONTON - Sophomore guard Jordan Baker notched a double-double as the Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Calgary Dinos 78-68 Saturday night in the U of A’s Main Gym, the final regular conference event ever in the historic facility.

Baker notched 23 points and game-high 12 rebounds, while fourth year shooting guard Daniel Ferguson banked 27 points.  The win gives Alberta a 16-8 record, which is good enough for fifth place in the conference.  The Bears trail Victoria for fourth place, and the final home playoff position.

A pair of Dinos scored 14 points, as Keenan Milburn, and fourth-year Tyler Fidler, led Calgary in scoring as the Dinos dropped to 8-14. Calgary is currently tied with UFV for the final playoff position in Canada West, and they will face the defending CIS champion Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend to close out their regular season.

The Golden Bears are on a ‘bye’ weekend next weekend and will be watching the out of town scoreboard in order to see where they end up in the playoff positioning.

Cascades-Pronghorns Stats

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A night after suffering a close loss, the Fraser Valley Cascades bounced back to earn a much-needed weekend split with a 90-85 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday.
 
The Cascades move into a tie with the Dinos for eighth place at 8-14. Even with the loss and two games behind, the Horns (6-16) are not mathematically eliminated from the post season picture but the cards are stacked against the Horns with only two game remaining.

Zeon Gray and James Elliott had matching 18-point performances to pace the Cascades, while Sam Freeman chipped in with 17 points. For the second consecutive night, Derek Waldner led the Horns offensively and recorded a double-double for the seventh time this season. His 19 points were one better than Brandon Thomas-James’ 18. First-year Pronghorn Niko Kovacs continued his steady improvement and registered his first CIS double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Horns will host the Winnipeg Wesmen to close out the Canada West season next weekend, while the Cascades return home to host the Brandon Bobcats in their season finale.

Wesmen-Bobcats Stats

BRANDON, MB - The Brandon Bobcats (4-18) played host to the Winnipeg Wesmen (5-17) on Saturday, falling 71-63.
 
The Wesmen jumped to a 42-22 lead at the half, before the Bobcats came out flying to start the second half. The 'Cats doubled up the Wesmen in the third outscoring Winnipeg 26-13. Despite shooting only 34 percent from the field, the Wesmen were able to hang on for the much-needed road victory.
 
Nick Lother led the charge scoring 21 points for the Wesmen. Craig Sharpe added 14 points and Kelvin Smith finished with 13.
 
Kyrie Coleman finished with a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) while Donovan Gayle had a team-high 15 points for the Bobcats. Rookie guard Jimi Falana added 11 points.
 
Next weekend Winnipeg is in Lethbridge. The Bobcats will travel to Abbotsford to take on Fraser Valley.
