Gee-Gees surprise hockey Martlets in nation's capital

Box Score
OTTAWA -- Mélodie Bouchard of Sept-Îles, Que., tallied four points as Ottawa defeated fifth-ranked McGill 4-1 in RSEQ women's hockey, Saturday, at the uOttawa Sports Complex.

The loss dropped the Martlets' overall record to 90-15-7 in 112 lifetime meetings with the Gee-Gees.

Bouchard, a 5-foot-4 social sciences sophomore and reigning RSEQ rookie of the year, scored two goals -- including the game-winner -- and added two assists.

She opened the scoring on the power play at 15:21 of the first, then beat goalie Tricia Deguire on a penalty shot after Martlets defenceman Zoe Todd was called for closing her hand on the puck at 1:59 of the middle frame.

Marimée Godbout-Parent scored at 11:18 of the second, and teammate Roxanne Rioux brought the score to 4-0 less than five minutes later with a power-play marker at 15:57.

Psychology freshman Jade Downie-Landry of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., put McGill on the board on the power play at 2:26 of the third with assists from Olivia Atkinson and Marie-Philip Lavoie, but it was too little, too late for the visitors, who were missing team captain Melodie Daoust, who was with Team Canada at the Four Nations Cup tournament in Finland.

Ottawa netminder Maude Levesque-Ryan turned away 33 Martlets shots to earn the win and improved her record to 1-1-0. Deguire, a freshman from Sherbrooke, Que., who has started all 15 games this season, made 31 saves as her record fell to 2-1-0 in conference play.

The Martlets were 1-for-3 on the power play and gave up goals on three of four penalties taken, including the penalty shot which was given up during a Gee-Gees power play.

Ottawa (2-0-1) hosts Montreal (3-2-0) on Friday, Nov. 4, while McGill (2-1-0) visits Carleton (2-1-0) at 7 p.m. that evening.
