Balanced Scoring Lifts Gryphon’s Past Warriors 87-54

GUELPH, Ont. - Saturday afternoon the Guelph Gryphon's women's basketball team kicked off the second half of their season at home by dumping the Waterloo Warriors 87-54 in OUA action. Guelph had six players reach double figures, with Kayla Goodhoofd and Samantha Russell scoring 15 points each. With the win, the Gryphon's improved to 5-7 on the season, with Waterloo dropping to 1-11.
 
Joining Goodhoofd and Russell in scoring was Jasmine Douglas, with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks, while Kate MacTavish added 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Barbara Inrig-Pieterse netted 12 points, including two big three pointers in the opening quarter to put the Gryphon's ahead to stay.
 
Laura Burnett scored 13 points to go with six steals for the Warriors, while Theresa Jacobse, Sam McIntyre, and Colleen Quinlan each added seven. The Warriors were held to just 24% shooting on the day, while Guelph was able to connect on 47% from the field.
 
Women's Basketball
The Gryphon's were able to get off to a hot start, hitting 11-17 first quarter shots to take a 29-15 lead after the first quarter. Inrig-Piete had eight in the opening quarter, and was instrumental in forcing the Warriors into tough shots. Goodhoofd also started strong for the Gryphon's, netting six points to go with three assists.
 
Guelph was able to extend their lead to 20 points in the second quarter by attacking the paint and getting to the free-throw line. By halftime, the Gryphon's had already attempted 21 free-throws, while outrebounding the Warriors 25-10. Behind Goodjoofd, Inrig-Piete, and Ali Dzikowski, the Gryphon's led 45-25 at the half.
 
The second half saw Guelph continue to force the Warriors into poor shots, and continued to lead by double digits throughout the remained of the game. Russell scored nine of her 15 points in the fourth, getting to the free-throw line early and often to clinch the game. Guelph outscored Waterloo 25-17 in the fourth, and held a 52-26 rebounding advantage for the game.
 
Guelph will be looking to make it two in a row when they take on the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks Wednesday, January 18th at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. Tipoff is scheduled for 6pm.
