CIS No. 7 Axemen snap two-game losing streak with 4-2 win over Moncton

(MONCTON, N.B.) - The CIS No. 7-ranked Axemen snapped a two-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the host Moncton Aigles Bleus Friday night.

The game is the first of a New Brunswick road trip that concludes Saturday night against the UNB Varsity Reds in Fredericton.

Just over three minutes into the opening period the Aigles Bleus' Thiery Comtois scored to give Moncton the momentum and 1-0 lead that lasted for the remainder of the first pieord and 13 minutes into the second frame.

The Axemen tied the game at 13:01 of the second when Mike Cazzola scored an unassisted goal - his sixth goal of the season. Cazzola would not stop there, scoring 49 seconds later - his second goal of the night and seventh of the season earned him the Subway first star of the game. Chris Owens and Liam Heelis were credited for the assists.

Early in the third period, Brett Thompson scored the eventual game winner to give Acadia a 3-1 lead only 1:57 into the final frame. Just over 50 seconds later, senior forward Alex Beaton pushed the lead to 4-1 on a goal assisted by Cazzola and Taylor Makin.

Pierre Durepos scored with under five minutes remaining in the game to close the gap to two goals. The Aigles Bleus put pressure on the Axemen including over two minutes with the goaltender pulled but were unable to send the game into overtime with two quick goals.

The Axemen outshot Moncton 28-14 after two periods, but the Aigles Bleus rallied in the closing minutes of the third, outshooting Acadia 11-3. Moncton's Adrien Lemay was outstanding, stopping 26 shots in two periods and 29 overall.

Acadia improves to 8-3-0 and will head to UNB tomorrow night for the second of two road games, while Moncton drops to 6-4-1 and will host the red hot Saint Mary's Huskies who dropped UNB 4-3  Friday night in Fredericton.
