WBB | Group Effort Earns Opening Day Win

The Voyageurs women's basketball team opened up their season with a win on Friday night as they downed the visiting Waterloo Warriors, 49-46 at the Ben Avery Gym.

After an early Warriors basket to open the scoring, the Voyageurs went on to drain their next six baskets, going up 12-2 in the quarter. After that, they allowed just one more basket from the Warriors to end the quarter up 17-4.

The Warriors generated an offensive burst of their own in the second quarter as they began sinking some shots, but strong defensive plays by the Voyageurs kept the bursts at bay. The offensive story in the quarter was much of the same for the Voyageurs as they hit some momentum shifting threes, courtesy of Andrea Zulich, to head into the half up 30-15.

The Voyageurs came out of the half with more strong ball movement, dishing the ball to the opportune opening player, and Emily Tinnes getting in on the three-point action, draining two from beyond the arc to put the Voyageurs up by 19 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Warriors seemed to come alive in the fourth as everything they put up ended in another tally, outscoring the Voyageurs 22-6 in the quarter. They secured the ball for a majority of the time, putting the Voyageurs on the defensive for the last ten minutes. However, the Voyageurs, who outrebounded the Warriors 44-32, solidified their defensive strategy and shut down the Warriors offense in the last two minutes of the game to secure the victory, 49-46.

Leading the group effort for the Voyageurs were veterans Emily Tinnes (11 points) and Andrea Zulich (10 points).

The Voyageurs are back in action Saturday night as they welcome the Laurier Golden Hawks to the Ben Avery Gym at 6pm.
