Ridgebacks top nationally-ranked Ravens in overtime thriller

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team ended the 2018 portion of their season on a high note Saturday afternoon when they defeated the No. 7 Carleton Ravens in a thrilling 2-1 overtime game.

It was another tough match up for the Ridgebacks as the Ravens entered the game sitting in third place in the conference with a 10-3-3 record. Despite a tough overtime loss the night before to the first-place Gee-Gees, the Ridgebacks were able to bounce back and create a different outcome for themselves.

A goal midway through the first from the Ravens had the Ridgebacks on their heels to start the game off. Coming out hot in the second, the Ridgebacks were able to capitalize on a sloppy neutral zone play from the Ravens and tie things back up.

Teams traded chances throughout the remainder of regulation time, both goalies making key stops, as penalties on both sides played a role late in the game. As a result, the Ridgebacks found themselves with a late game power play that would carry over to extra time. With just seconds to go in the Ravens penalty, Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) stepped up from the blue line and fired in the game winner.

The Ridgebacks will now have a break until the new year when they hit the ice again at home against the Queen's Gaels on January 4.
  • Matthew Sozanski opened the scoring in the first period for the Ravens off a transition in the offensive zone, taking the drop pass from Brett Gustavsen and burying the puck top-left corner.
Malik Johnson (Montreal, Que.) recorded his eighth goal of the year in the second period, taking the feed from Bryce Fiske (La Ronge, Sask.) and streaking up the neutral zone, breaking free of both Raven defenders and riffling a shot past the goalie's blocker.
Mike Robinson notched his 48th career goal (12th on the season) when he walked in from the blue line and blasted a shot from the high slot, through a screen, to give the Ridgebacks their overtime winner.
Michael Bullion (Anchorage, Alaska) earned his eighth win of the season making 37.
• Francois Brassard made a total of 37 saves on 39 shots for the Ravens.
  Overall: 11-7-3
Conference Record: 9-5-3

Next Game: Friday, Jan. 4 vs. Queen's Gaels • 12:30 p.m. – Campus Ice Centre
