Ridgebacks earn point versus No. 5 Gaels

OSHAWA, Ont. - The UOIT Ridgebacks men's hockey team opened 2019 by earning a point versus the No. 5 nationally ranked Queen's Gaels following a 2-1 shootout loss on Friday afternoon at the Campus Ice Centre.

After a sluggish opening frame which saw the Ridgebacks outshot 12-7 and down 1-0 after a tip in goal by the Gaels, UOIT responded by dominating scoring opportunities through the next 40 minutes of action. Finding an equalizer during a second period power play, neither team could then find a lead. A physical and fast paced game through the final minutes of regulation, the five minute three-on-three overtime frame solved nothing. In the skills competition, the Gaels came out on top scoring both their shootout attempts, while the Ridgebacks could not find one of their own.

UOIT will hit the road tomorrow as they challenge the Gaels in Kingston on Saturday evening. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. with the game also being streamed on OUA.tv.
  • Henry Thompson opened the scoring in the first period for the Gaels deflecting in a wrap-around attempt by Jared Bethune.
• Taking advantage of a Josh Maguire (Cobourg, Ont.) screen in front of the Queen's net, Brennan Roy (Iroquois Falls, Ont.) blasted home a powerplay marker with just two minutes remaining in the second period to even the game 1-1.
• Gaels forward Slater Doggett and defenceman Spencer Abraham scored the lone shootout goals in the shootout victory.
  • Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) started in net for the Ridgebacks, finishing the afternoon contest with 32 saves.
• Facing plenty of pressure from the UOIT attack, Justin Fazio earned the win making 35 stops.
  Overall: 11-7-4
Conference Record: 9-5-4
