SOCCER (w): Tiberio tallies twice as tidal wave trips Concordia in cross-town clash

MONTREAL -- Montrealer Giovanna Tiberio taliied twice as McGill routed Concordia 6-1 in Quebec university women's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.

The Stingers were undermanned with a number of injuries and suspensions, which resulted in McGill's largest margin of defeat over Concordia since a 5-0 win on Sept. 18, 2009. It was also the highest offensive outburst for the Martlets since a 6-1 home-field decision over Sherbrooke on Sept. 22, 2019.

The Martlets had a commanding tactical edge in attempted shots (18-2), shots on net (13-2) and corner kicks (6-0).

Tiberio, a 5-foot-10 all-star striker, opener the scoring in the 18th minute of play, heeling the ball from behind past the Stingers unsuspecting goalkeeper.

Thalia Krauth-Ibarz, a sophomore from Brossard, Que., gave the Martlets a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute, then Tiberio, a 22-year-old psychology senior, put the game out of reach to give the Martlets a commanding 3-0 lead four minutes before halftime.

The Stingers only tally was an own goal that bounced off a few McGill defenders in the 56th minute. It cost netminder Brenna Bordeniuk the shutout. Bordeniuk, a freshman from Calgary, made her fourth start in the team's five games played and was credited with the victory, saving one of two shots faced. Annastasia Fox, her Concordia counterpart, saved seven of 13 shots and took the loss.

McGill tallied three more goals down the stretch, from the feet of Liliane Lefebvre (58th) of Toronto, Zoe Gardiner (76th) of Ottawa and Ariel Carignan (81st) of Sherbrooke.

Concordia drew 10 of the 19 fouls called in the game and were assessed both yellow cards issued by the referee, with Kyara D'Annessa and Sara Carriere receiving their infractions in the 51st and 69th minutes, respectively.

The Martlets are perched fourth in the seven team RSEQ conference with a 2-2-2 record.  The top four teams qualify and only seven contests remain before the playoffs, McGill will host last-place Sherbrooke (1-5-0) in on Sunday at 6 p.m.

The seventh-place Stingers dropped to 1-4-1, currently four points behind McGill for the last playoff berth. Concordia plays at fifth-place Bishop's (2-3-1) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
