ABBOTSFORD, BC - The CIS #8-ranked Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the #3 UBC Thunderbirds 77-72 at the Envision Athletic Centre on Friday to improve their record to 11-5.

The first-place UBC Thunderbirds record fall to 12-3, but have already qualified for the post-season.

The Cascades were led by Joel Friesen, with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.  Kyle Grewal, had 13 points, eight rebounds.

The Thunderbirds top scorer was Nathan Yu`, with a game-high 24 point performance. Doug Plumb added 15 points against his old school.

The Cascades host the Thunderbirds on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Trinity Western 89 Thompson Rivers 77

LANGLEY, BC – Led by a career-high 28-point and 15-rebound night from Sean Peter, the Trinity Western posted an 89-77 victory over Thompson Rivers Friday at the Langley Events Centre.

After Peter, for the Spartans, it was Calvin Westbrook with 20 points and six rebounds, Smith with 15 points and five assists and Kurtis Osborne with 11 points and eight boards.

The WolfPack were led by Chas Kok, who had 22 pionts and eight rebounds, Justin King, who returned to the court from injury to collect 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, and Akeem Pierre, who had 16 points and and a pair of steals.

The win improves the Spartans to 9-7 on the season as they will now enter the playoffs as the Canada West wildcard and will play the winner of the Praire Division in the first round of the playoffs. The loss drops Thompson Rivers to 5-10.

The teams meet in a rematch Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre. The game will be streamed live on www.canadawest.tv.

Golden Bears-Cougars Stats

REGINA – Alberta’s Daniel Ferguson and Jordan Baker combined to lead the CIS #10 Golden Bears to an 81-69 victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
Ferguson led all scorers with 26 points, while Baker had 21 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to record a huge double-double as No. 10-ranked Alberta improves to 11-6 with the victory.
 
Regina’s Connor Burns had a career-high 23 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to record his third consecutive double-double. Paul Gareau scored 11 points and had 12 rebounds to notch a double-double.
 
The Cougars move to 5-11 with the setback. Alberta is now 11-6, in second place in the Prairie Division.
 
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS starting at 8:00 p.m.

Huskies-Wesmen Stats

WINNIPEG - The Saskatchewan Huskies regrouped from a slow start to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 91-61 on Friday at the Duckworth Centre.

The victory improves the CIS #4 Huskies to 12-4 and the loss drops Winnipeg to 4-13 on the season.

Peter Lomuro led the Huskies, with 18 points. Guard Jamelle Barrett added 16 points and eight assists. Chris Unsworth had 13 points.

Travis Krahn led the Wesmen with 15 points, including four-three pointers. Andew Cunningham added 10 points and eight assists. Krahn and Brayden Duff shared the team in  rebounds with five each.

The Wesmen and Huskies wrap up their weekend series on Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 8:00 p.m.

Dinos-Bisons Stats

WINNIPEG - On Friday, the Calghary Dinos (8-10) defeated the hometown Manitoba Bisons (8-10) 98-89 at Investors Group Athletic Centre.

With the win, Calgary moves into a tie with Manitoba for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Prairie division of the Canada West conference.

Boris Bakovic scored 22 on the night and Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson had 21. Fidler led all scorers with 27, and added 13 rebounds for the double-double.

Stephan Walton led the Bisons in scoring with 25 points.

The Bisons now travel to Saskatchewan for a back-to-back series against the Huskies on Feb. 10 and 11. The Dinos take on Winnipeg at home on Friday and Saturday.

BRANDON, MB - Playoff implications were on the line for both the Brandon Bobcats and Lethbridge Pronghorns Friady night in Brandon, but it would be the Bobcats who would prevail 92-87.
 
The 'Cats were led by Ali-Mounir Benabdelhak's game-high 24 points and team high nine rebounds. Rookie point guard Ilarion Bonhomme continued his break-out season, finishing with 21 points and nine assists.
 
Daryl Cooper had a team-high 22 points for the 'Horns, while Dominyc Coward and Derek Waldner both finished with double-doubles, both picking up 18 point and 12 rebounds.
 
The loss snaps the Pronghorns four-game winning streak. They now sit with a record of 9-8 on the season. The win improves the Bobcats record to 6-11 and snaps a five game skid. The teams meet again Saturday in what will be the final basketball game played in the BU Gymnasium.

KELOWNA, BC - The UBC Okanagan Heat could not shut down Victoria's speedy and aggressive offence, falling to the CIS #7 Vikes by 27 points 76-49 at UBC’s Okanagan campus.

Vikes star Ryan MacKinnon hit 1300 career points, scoring a game-high 21. Terrell Evans scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Heat’s Yassine Ghomari finished with a team-high 10 points as did Steve Morrison, who also grabbed four rebounds.

With the win the Vikes move up to 12-3, tied with the Thunderbirds atop the Pacific Division standings. The Heat fall to 2-13 in conference play.

Dinos-Bisons Stats

WINNIPEG - The Manitoba Bisons mwere looking to end a four-game losing steak on Thursday, but instead fell 87-79 to the surging Calgary Dinos at the Investors Group Athletic Centre for some Canada West action.

Leading the Bisons in scoring was Kurtis Sansregret, who put up 18 on the evening. Kevin Oliver scored 11 and pulled down 12 rebounds.

For Calgary, it was unofficial all-time CIS scoring leader Boris Bakovic with 21 points to go with eight rebounds. Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson had a double-double - 18 points, 11 boards.

The Bisons fall to 8-9 on the season, clinging to the final playoff spot, while the Dinos climb to 7-10.

The Dinos and Bisons play next on Friday, 8:00 p.m. in the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
