Huskies top Capers 3-1

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Saint Mary's Shelby Michaels came out swinging Saturday afternoon. The Mill Bay, B.C. native had 16 kills to lead her Huskies in a 3-1 win over the Cape Breton Capers in AUS women's volleyball action.

Scores were 25-21, 22-25, 25-12, 25-21 on the afternoon.

SMU led 1-0 after the first set. Saint Mary's built a seven-point lead before CBU rallied down the stretch, making it closer on the scoreboard 25-21.

The Huskies jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the second set before both teams traded points in the frame. Tied up at 18 and 21 all, Cape Breton scored the last three points for the second set win 25-22.

A 3-3 tie was the closest CBU got as SMU stream rolled the third set, winning 25-12. 

Five ties within the first 20 points had both teams playing well to start the fourth set. Tied up 10-10, SMU used a five-point run to build a 15-10 cushion before running away with a 25-21 win. 

CBU's Cassie MacDonald (Glace Bay, N.S.) paced the Capers with 11 kills and 12 digs. 

Scoring for the Huskies were Rachel Windhorst (Surrey, B.C.) with 15 kills, Maddie Clark (Ottawa, Ont.) with 10, Erin Smith (Moncton, N.B.) with five, Elly Prince (Calgary, Alta.) with three and Nathalie MacPherson who finished with two kills.

Saint Mary's record improves to 9-4 while CBU falls to 0-12.

The Huskies' home stand continues Friday Jan. 30 versus the second-place UNB Varsity Reds (8-5). Game time is set for 7 p.m.

The Capers next take to the court Saturday, Jan. 31 when they host the Memorial Sea-Hawks at 7 p.m.
