Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | by John Edwards, Bishop's Sports Information

Gaiters’ double double-double not enough in 64-63 loss to UQAM

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Mara Marchizotti and Edith Noblecilla picked up double-doubles, but it was not enough as the Bishop's Gaiters fell 64-63 to the UQAM Citadins in RSEQ university women's basketball action at the Mitchell Gym, Saturday.

Marchizotti, a fourth-year centre from Buenos Aires, Argentina, picked up 21 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs, as she shot a blistering 10-from-13 from the field. Noblecilla, meanwhile, had 12 points and 12 assists, and was one rebound shy of a triple-double.

The Gaiters (5-4, 0-2) led throughout most of the game, including 30-26 at halftime and by as many as nine points midway through the third quarter. However, UQAM responded with a 6-0 run to pull back to within three points.

The Citadins (7-3, 1-0) took the lead themselves early in the fourth quarter, and led by six points, at 54-48, with 7:55 to play. However, the Gaiters pulled back to within two points. The Gaiters had the ball, trailing 64-61 with 12 seconds to go, but a pair of deliberate UQAM fouls disrupted the Gaiter offence and forced Bishop's to settle for two points.

Marchizotti and Noblecilla were the only Gaiters in double figures. Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que.) and Maeva Dinalle (Paris, France) each had six points for Bishop's.

Véronique Boivin (Quebec City, Que.) came off the bench to lead the Citadins with 19 points, while Queteline Celestin (Cayenne, France) added 15. The Citadins outrebounded Bishop's 44-41, led by Celestin's eight boards.

Bishop's shot 43.1 per cent from the field in the game, while holding UQAM to 37.5 per cent, but the Gaiters' 18 turnovers proved costly.

The Gaiters are back in action on Friday night as they visit the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. Their next home game is on Saturday, Nov. 26 against McGill. UQAM, meanwhile, is back in action on Thursday as they host McGill.
