2-1 win over MUN advances Axewomen to final

SYDNEY, N.S. – The second semi-final of the night featured the No. 2 seeded Memorial Seahawks against the No. 3 Acadia Axewomen at CBU Field. The two teams entered the contest knowing that the #1 seed Cape Breton Capers were knocked out by StFX in penalty kicks. 

The first half featured some excellent back and forth possessons will lots of shots for both teams. AUS Most Valuable Player Jesse Noseworthy (St. John's, Nfld.) opened the scoring for Memorial in the 17th minute, assisted by Hannah Rivkin (St. John's, Nfld.). The Sea-Hawks entered the halftime with a 1-0 lead. 

Memorial tried to protect the lead and played defensively for the most part of the remainder of the game, but the Axewomen kept the pressure on and eventually Nicole Wambolt (Hammonds Plains, N.S.) broke through in the 88th minute to tie the game on a long shot rebound to send the second semi-final of the night to extra-time. 

The Axewomen got another goal quickly in extra time, again by Wambolt who scored in the 3rd minute of overtime play. Acadia defended the lead and forced Memorial wide as much as they could to retain the 2-1 lead.

Acadia was the second lower seed to win in today's semi-final matchups. Wambolt was named the Subway Player of the Game for her two goal effort.

The Axewomen landed 12 shots on goal compared to the Sea-Hawks five. Emma Connell (Hampton, N.B.) was tested on 13 shots and posted 4 saves. 

The AUS Championship final is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at CBU field and will match the No. 4 seeded St.Francis Xavier X-women against the Axewomen. The previous meeting of both teams was on October 16 in Wolfville, which resulted in a 2-2 tie.

The last time both Axemen and Axewomen were both in the championship game in the same season resulted in 1996 AUAA titles for both teams.
