Axewomen pickup big win and tie in NB

The Axewomen came away from a tough road trip in New Brunswick with a big win against Moncton and a tie against UNB Varsity Reds. The win and tie gives Acadia a 2-0-2 record, trailing the 3-0-1 Varsity Reds who sit in first place.

Acadia started the visit to New Brunswick with a lopsided 6-0 win over the winless Moncton Aigles Bleus. Rookie Jenna Howell scored the first and second goal at the 14 minute mark and 19 minute mark and just before the end of the first half, fourth year centre back Jenna Blackburn gave the Axewomen a 3-0 lead heading into the locker room.

Pressure continued in the second half after the Axewomen posted 14 shots in the first half. Second year striker Meghan Earle netted three goals beginning at the 70th minute followed by goals in the 80th and 88th. Earle leads Axewomen with five goals this season and sits second in AUS scoring race.

Head Coach Amit Batra was pleased with the intensity of the Axeowmen's first road game. "Against Moncton we were on the score sheet early and a penalty in the first half gave us a nice cushion. Everyone of the players contributed". He added, "It was nice to see rookie Jenna Howell with the game winner and her 2nd and 3rd goals of the season. Meghan Earle finished the scoring with some nice combinations with Laura Gray to notch the first hat  trick of her career".

In Fredericton the next day the Axewomen and UNB played to a 0-0 tie in Fredericton today.

Both teams came off of big wins on Saturday afternoon. The two teams showed themselves to be remarkably evenly matched out on BMO Field today, having near exact numbers of opportunities and displaying very similar methods of creating them.

The last time UNB met Acadia in 2013, it was a different story, with UNB losing 0-4.

"This was a highly anticipated match up for both teams", pointed out Batra. "Each team had spells of possession but both teams defended well and made it difficult to break each other down".

A tight defensive battle that only recorded a total of 7 shots on net that included 4 Acadia shots. "There were definitely chances to win and we could take more chances in attack", commented Batra. "In the end a fair result and a point on the road against a very competitive team".

The Axewomen will be hosting StFX X-Women this Friday evening at 5:00 pm and then a Sunday morning at 11:00 am game against the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks. The X-Women sit at 2-0-1, one point behind Acadia. Memorial is winless at 0-2-0.
