X-Men move into sole possession of second place with win over Tommies

(Fredericton, N.B.) - On the strength of three unanswered first-period goals, the CIS #7 ranked StFX X-Men (7-1-2) defeated the host St. Thomas Tommies (0-10) 4-1 in AUS hockey action Friday night at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

With the win the X-Men move into sole possession of second place in the AUS standings.

At 3:16 of the opening 20 minutes, on the power play, Bronson Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, AB) put the X-Men on the board, as his shot went off the post and in the net past Tommies netminder  netminder Tyson Teichmann (Belleville, ON). The assists went to Jagger Dirk (Penticton, BC) and Holden Cook (Peterborough, ON).

The X-Men doubled their advantage, at the 11:10 mark, on a goal from Cory MacIntosh (North Sydney, NS) who scored on a wrister from the wing. Dirk, with his second assist of the game, and Eric Locke (Toronto, ON) garnered the helpers.

Cook made it 3-0, at 13:05, on assists from Nathan Pancel (Ottawa, ON) and Michael Clarke (Peterborough, ON).

StFX outshot the Tommies 11-5 in the opening frame.

In the second period, St. Thomas scored their lone goal. At 17:55, Rankyn Campbell (Rexton, NB) completed a play from Shane McColgan (Redondo Beach, CA) and Eric Diodati (Niagara Falls, ON).

The Tommies outshot the X-Men 10-8 in the second period but the visitors held onto the 3-1 advantage after 30 minutes.

StFX tallied the only third-period goal, with Trey Lewis (Aldouane, NB) converting off a slap shot from the point, at the 15:47 mark. Nathan Chiarlitti (Maple, ON) and Kristoff Kontos (Penetanguishene, ON) provided the assists.

Drew Owsley (Lethbridge, AB) - the Subway player of the game and first star - made 24 saves for the win, while Tyson Teichmann turned aside 21 shots for the loss.

The second and third star selections, respectively, were Dirk of the X-Men and Campbell of the Tommies.

Both teams will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 14, when the Tommies host the Dalhousie Tigers, while the X-Men will travel to Moncton to face Les Aigles Bleus.

Puck drop for both games is 7 p.m.
