Friday men's hockey: Huskies, Bisons win Canada West contests; Horns edge T-Birds in SO

REGINA, Sask. - The Regina Cougars suffered a 5-2 loss to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the Cougars’ Canada West home opener at the Co-operators Centre on Friday evening.
 
Garrett Thiessen, Kyle Ross, Shaun Vey, Kyle Bortis, and Chad Suer all scored in the win for Saskatchewan, while Dayton Fossum and Johnathan Sonntag replied with third-period goals for the Cougars. Vey added two assists to record a three-point night for the Huskies.
 
Saskatchewan goaltender David Reekie stopped 23 of 25 shots to earn the win for the Huskies, while Regina’s A.J. Whiffen was tagged with the loss after allowing three goals in the first 4:47 of the contest.
 
The loss drops the Cougars to 0-3-0, while Saskatchewan improves to 2-0-0 on the season.
 
Saskatchewan outshot Regina 46-25. Lucas Gore made 39 saves in relief of Whiffen.
 
The two teams meet on Saturday, 7:00 p.m. in Saskatoon. The game will be broadcast live at www.canadawest.tv.

EDMONTON - Despite the Alberta Golden Bears erasing a three-goal deficit in the third period, a late goal by the Manitoba Bisons gave the visitors a 5-4 victory on Friday at Clare Drake Arena.

Team captain Mike Hellyer tallied the beautiful, top-shelf winner with 93 seconds left on the clock while Blair Macaulay and Ian Duval each had a goal and an assist to help stake the Bisons to their 4-1 lead. Defenseman Dane Crowley chipped in two helpers with fellow rearguard Myles Rumsey and forward Tyler Dittmer adding singles.

Starting the Alberta comeback in the final frame was blueliner Ben Lindemulder before rookie forwards James Dobrowolski and Levko Koper evened the score with just under five minutes left to play. Winnipeg native Johnny Lazo notched the Bears’ first goal; Sean Ringrose and Jesse Craige each had a pair of assists.

The 2-1 Golden Bears will face off against the 3-0 Manitoba Bisons in game two of their weekend series on Saturday, 7:00 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Down two goals just past the mid-way point of the game, the Lethbridge Pronghorns rallied from behind to upend the UBC Thunderbirds 4-3 in a shootout.

With the win the ‘Horns earn their first points of the season and improve to 1-1-0. The Thunderbirds have earned points in all three of their conference games thus far and move to 1-0-2 on the season.

Horns Captain Dustin Moore led the comeback with a pair of goals, including the tying goal late in the second period and the go ahead goal with just over six minutes remaining. Former Medicine Hat Tiger Taylor Gal had the other ‘Horns marker.

Mark Desloges, Cole Wilgosh  and Justin McCrae responded for the Thunderbirds.

After five minutes of 4-on-4 and 3-on-3 solved nothing and both goaltenders turned away the first four shooters in the shootout, while sophomore Dan Iwanski would score in the fifth round. Iwanski outwaited White, flipping the puck back and over White’s pad. Max Grassi had one last chance to force the shootout into sudden death, but Bowles flashed the glove to seal the victory.

White was the busier of the two goaltenders, finishing with 38 saves, while Bowles finished the night with 29 stops.

The ‘Horns and T-Birds will conclude the weekend serieson Saturday at Nicholas Sheran Arena, 7:00 p.m. The Game can also be viewed at www.canadawest.tv
