X-Men split opening soccer matches

The StFX X-Men (1-1) split a pair of matches on the opening weekend of the AUS regular season.

Sunday, in Sackville, New Brunswick, Jaryd Morrissey scored in the 90th minute to give the Mount Allison Mounties a 1-0 victory over the blue and white.

Junior forward Jordan Roberts of Whitby, Ontario, had three of the seven X-Men shots on goal, while senior midfielder Randy Ribeiro, of Cambridge, Ontario, added two.

Thomas Pieroway, a freshman keeper from Conception Bay, Newfoundland, made five saves in the loss.

Makenzie Hill recorded the win for the home team.

Saturday, in their home opener, Roberts scored the winner at the 81st minute, on a set-up from senior midfielder Kareem Henry of Mississauga, Ontario, in a 2-1 StFX win over the rival Saint Mary's Huskies.

Late in the first half, Mohamed Abokar gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at Oland Stadium.

In the 68th minute, Natneal Tecle, a sophomore midfielder from Calgary, Alberta, deposited the rebound from a Ribeiro free-kick behind Saint Mary's keeper Adam Miller.

"It means a lot," Ribeiro, the X-Men captain, said after the victory.

"We didn't quit. We rallied and it was a great effort by our team," he added.

The X-Men had seven shots on goal, with Ribeiro leading the charge with three.

Sam Hutchison, a fourth-year keeper from Victoria, British Columbia, made two saves, including a key one in the opening half, for the victory.  

The X-Men return to action Sunday, Sept. 14, when they travel to Charlottetown to face the UPEI Panthers.

The next home match for StFX is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 21, against the Dalhousie Tigers, beginning at 3:15 p.m.
