WOLFVILLE, N.S. - A four game winning streak came to an end after the CIS No. 7 Saint Mary's Huskies dropped the No. 2 Acadia Axemen 3-2 in a battle for first place in the AUS. An evenly matched game, both teams took advantage of several powerplay opportunities. In the first meeting between both teams this season, Acadia went only 2 for 7 on the man-advantage compared to the Huskies two for two with the extra man.

Acadia opened the scoring early in the first period, as rookie forward Zach Franko put a wrist shot to the far side of Anthony Peters to put the Axemen up by one on the man-advantage. Sam Fioretti and Boston Leier added the assists on the only goal of the opening frame.

The second frame was a little more physical as the Huskies scored two unanswered goals in the second period. On an Acadia blocked shot, the puck landed right back on the stick of Stephen MacAulay, who took a quick wrist shot through traffic to beat Brandon Glover over the shoulder and off the crossbar. The goal was the first of two power play goals by MacAulay in the second period.

MacAulay's second goal came late in the second, after finding a bouncing puck and making no mistake in putting it low blocker side to give the Huskies' their first lead of the game.

After a point shot by Huskie Jamie Doornbosch, Glover was unable to handle the rebound which was netted by Mitchell Maynard, giving Saint Mary's a 3-1 lead at the 1:14 mark of the final frame.

With 14 minutes remaining in the game, AUS leading scorer Brett Thompson netted his seventh goal of the season to put the Axemen within one. It would be the last goal of the game as the strong defensive play from Saint Mary's was too much for the Axemen this time around. Thompson's goal came on the power play, banking in his own rebound, with Huskie netminder Anthony Peters unable to handle the rebound.

Peters stopped 31 of 33 shots as the Huskies were heavily outshot, while Glover made 16 saves.

Acadia's next home game is tomorrow night as they play host to the StFX who handed the Axemen there only loss prior to tonight's game. The Huskies' win wraps up a two game week where they grabbed a win against the Dalhousie Tigers on Wednesday Night.
