MHKY | Voyageurs Can't Overcome Lakers' Offensive Onslaught
The Laurentian Voyageurs played a Tuesday night battle of the north on October 16th. The Voyageurs travelled to the Nipissing Lakers home arena for an ever so interesting and action packed battle of the northern schools of Ontario.
The game was most definitely action packed as there was a combined 30 minutes of penalties and 11 goals were scored but, unfortunately, the Vees ended up on the wrong side of the win column.
The Lakers struck hard and fast as, just three minutes and six minutes into the first period, they had scored two goals on the Vees Mackenzie Savard. Nik Kalpousos and Collin Campbell would pick up the point for the goal on the Lakers.
The Vees didn't fall back onto their heels though, as Russell Nowry scored his second ever OUA goal and first of the 2018 season goal on the power play to cut the Lakers lead in half, the assists on the Voyageurs goal would be Zach Wilkie and Haydn Hopkins.
The second period started off with penalty trouble when Nipissing took advantage of the Voyageurs tripping and slashing penalties by scoring another two goals, both on the power play, the scorers of those goals of Colin Campbell and Colby Tower.
After two more unanswered goals the Voyageurs had had enough and David Chiarelli, with the help of Jayme Forslund and David Elford, scored the Voyageurs second goal to again cut the Lakers lead in half. After the Vees goal, they would head to the dressing room down two goals with only 20 more minutes of play left and the score being 4-2.
The third period started off with three unanswered Nipissing goals at the 30 second mark, the two minute mark and the three minute mark. Order respectively, Kylor Wall, Dylan Staples and Gael Lebwele would all pick up tallies.
After the Lakers scoring streak putting them up 7-2, the Voyageurs looked to put a plan into action to cut into the Lakers lead. The first goal to answer the Lakers was scored by Xavier Couture with the help of Chiarelli and Hopkins. With only thirteen minutes to go the Voyageurs had cut the Lakers lead to four. The last goal of the night was a Voyageurs power play goal scored by Julian Makary with the assistance of Paul-Antoine Gagnon and Couture at 9:03.
Unfortunately the Voyageurs offensive push was not enough to trump the Lakers seven goal game.
The Vees look to bounce back October 19th and 20th for Laurentian's homecoming against Western and Toronto, both games at 7:35pm.
