Axewomen lose road matches in NB

MONCTON, N.S. – Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (1-5) won their 2015-2016 Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball season home opener with a 3-1 win over Acadia Axewomen (0-2), on Saturday at the CEPS Louis-J.-Robichaud.

The Aigles Bleus were able to score points at the right moments and play with determination to win in four sets by 28-30, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-21. The Axewomen  took the first set following a number of exciting exchanges on the court.

Christelle Bertin had 10 kills, 42 attacks and 24 digs to score 14 points for Moncton. Sarah Ross had 19 points for the visitors and 10 digs.

"It's a team sport and we have a greater chance of winning when every individual steps up to the plate to provide points. Our lack of awareness of key break through points and an inability to maintain possession at these times really hurt us", pointed out head coach Michelle Woods.

In Fredericton, the UNB Varsity Reds earned a 3-2 win over the visiting Axewomen.

UNB scored 25-22 and 25-20 wins in the opening two sets, but then the third and fourth sets were just a close as the opening two, but Acadia prevailed. They took the third set 25-22 and the fourth 25-21.

Sarah Ross led the Axewomen with 15 kills and 13 digs. Hillary Monette recorded a game-high 29 digs.

Acadia head coach Michelle Wood, while disappointed with the loss, feels her team demonstrated some staying power. "To start off set one and set two the way that we did, it's not our typical way to start a match, but to have staying power, to come back, was good," said Wood. "I think that we wait for our opponent to approach us before we approach them and I think that has to change."

On the Varsity Reds' side of the net, Janie-Eve Doucet led the way. She 17 kills and 26 digs. Claire Richard had 27 digs.

With a 3-4 record, UNB sits atop the Atlantic University Sport standings. Acadia is last in the conference, with an 0-3 record.

The Varsity Reds go on the road next weekend, heading to Halifax for a Saturday date with the Saint Mary's Huskies, while the Axewomen visit Dalhousie next Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
