Canada West men's basketball: Wesley's double-double leads Winnipeg past Manitoba

WINNIPEG - Wesmen forward Steven Wesley and guard Andrew Cunningham each registered double doubles to help lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a dramatic 74-71 victory over the Manitoba Bisons in the final game of the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge on Wednesday at the Duckworth Centre.

Wesley scored a 21 points and hauled in 13 rebounds, while Cunningham scored 13 points and dished out 11 assists, to help the Wesmen improve their record to 8-3 which puts them in sole possession of second place in the Prairie Division. Manitoba with the loss drops to 7-4 heading into the holiday break.

Nolan Gooding added 11 points, including three-three pointers.Benny Iko had 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.

Yigit Ozsayiner led Manitoba with 19 points. Kevin Oliver finished with a double-double 17 points and 11 rebounds. Stephan Walton added 13 while Davidson Joseph finished with 10.

Winnipeg with the two basketball victories, combined with one volleyball victory win the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge by a 3-1 margin.

Winnipeg will next see action at the 46th Annual Wesmen Classic December 28-30. The team will resume regular season play on January 11-12 hosting Victoria and UBC. Manitoba will open up their second half schedules against UBC and Victoria on the same weekend.
