Tigers open season with 3-0 win over Mounties, Lewars out

The Dalhousie Tigers (1-0) men's soccer team started the season on a good note as they put the Mount Allison Mounties (0-1) away 3-0 in authoritative fashion on a windy Saturday afternoon on Wickwire field.

The win came at a price, however, as Tigers co-captain Tyler Lewars left the field on a stretcher after falling violently on his shoulder early in the first half.

The Tigers soldiered on without Lewars, and Zach Mbolekwa opened the scoring with a beautiful chip shot in the 24th minute, which floated into the back of the net and all Mounties keeper Greg McGuire could do was watch as the Tigers went up 1-0.

Bezick Evraire added a goal of his own ten minutes later, capitalizing off a rebound to push the Tigers lead to two as the first half ended.

The Mounties couldn't gain momentum in the second half as the Tigers kept play in the Mounties end for most of the half. William Wright came off the bench and added an insurance marker to increase the lead to three.

The Tigers outshot the Mounties 8-2 and looked very polished for their first game of the season. Jason Ross recorded his first shutout on the season, though he was not heavily tested.

The Mounties will hit the pitch again tomorrow when they face the StFX X-Men at home at 3:15pm. The Tigers will welcome the Acadia Axemen to Wickwire field, with kickoff also at 3:15pm.
