VANCOUVER – The quick-strike offence of the No. 2 Alberta Pandas was on full display as they raced away with a 39-0 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West women's rugby action on Saturday.

Morgan Patzelt, Miranda Monty and Chelsea Guthrie all had two tries for the visitors while Alanna Fittes recorded the remaining score to go along with two conversions.

An unconverted try by Monty in the fourth minute was all that the Pandas needed on offence. But two more tries in less than three minutes, after UBC had regrouped defensively, sealed the victory for Alberta.

After UBC was assessed a penalty in the 20th minute, Guthrie took advantage of a Thunderbirds' defence that was slow to set up and ran right through the team for a try that put Alberta up 10-0.

In the 22nd minute, UBC failed to field a kick, allowing the Pandas to pick up possession in T-Birds' territory. Alberta scored after working the ball down the field over seven phases, with Patzelt finally getting across the try line.

Another Pandas' score in the 40th minute, courtesy of Fittes, made it 29-0 going into halftime, despite UBC holding its own in the field position battle in the first half.

Alberta controlled the ball for large portions of the second half and scored twice more to improve to 2-0. UBC falls to 0-2.

The game in Vancouver was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon but was postponed because travel problems encountered by the visiting Pandas.

Now both teams will be forced to play two games in two days. Alberta will travel to Victoria for an 11:30 a.m. game while UBC will host its final home match of the Canada West regular season by welcoming the No. 9-ranked Calgary Dinos for a 1 p.m. start.
