WHKY | Lakers Cruise Past Voyageurs
On Saturday afternoon, the Voyageurs women's hockey team lost a thriller to the top seeded Nipissing Lakers 4-1. Saturday's action was an intense battle between to extremely hot teams. Both teams wanted to prove their dominance early, however neither team was able to score in the first period.
Then, at 7:04 of the second period, Taylor Philip intercepted a breakout pass and blew a shot by the blocker side of Nipissing goalie Jacqueline Rochefort to give the Voyageurs a 1-0 lead. The Lakers responded at 12:47 with a goal of their own when Taylor McManus snuck one between Laura Deller's pad and the post on the powerplay. The second period would end with the score deadlocked at two a piece.
The Lakers found themselves on powerplay to begin the third period. During this, Melissa Tolton snuck a shot from the point through traffic and over the shoulder of Deller to give the Lakers the lead.
Jade Gauthier furthered the Laker lead at 9:48 after just trickling the puck passed Deller on a solo effort. With less than a second remaining, the Lakers would add an empty netter for a final score of 4-1.
Despite the scoreboard, Saturday's game was action packed with great chances exchanged on both sides. The Voyageurs now occupy the fourth seed in the standings and sit just eight points back of first place. The Vees are back in action next weekend as they host Guelph and Brock at Countryside Arena.
