Box Score
OTTAWA --
Christophe Lalonde of Mirabel, Que., potted a pair of goals, including the winner in double overtime, as McGill rallied to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and skate away with a 3-2 victory over Ottawa in OUA men's hockey, Saturday, in the nation's capital.
Including a preseason affair, the result was McGill's third straight come-from-behind victory against the Gee-Gees this season, including a 6-3 on Friday in Montreal and a 4-3 double OT win on Sept. 14. McGill has now won six straight over the Gee-Gees since a 4-3 overtime setback on Jan. 6, 2013 and improved to 101-79-10 in 190 lifetime meetings with Ottawa, dating back to their first confrontation in 1968.
Lalonde
netted the deciding marker with a fantastic solo effort at 3:14 of the second five-minute overtime, converting passes from defenceman
Dominic Talbot-Tassi and centre
Mathieu Pompei. The 5-foot-9, 188-pound Lalonde also tied the game at 1-1 on a power-play midway through the first period., just three minutes after Ottawa's
Mathieu Newcombe of Grand-Digue, N.B., had given the home side a 1-0 lead on another man-advantage situation.
Ottawa took a 2-1 lead just 95 seconds into the middle period when
Mitchell Gibson of Cobourg, Ont., tallied but McGill forced overtime with a late goal by
Daniel Milne at 18:39 of the third period.
The Redmen had a 49-38 edge in shots as freshman goaltender
Louis-Philip Guindon of Montreal registered 36 saves and improved to 4-1 on the season. Graham Hunt made 46 saves in a losing cause for Ottawa as his record tumbled to 1-4.
Ottawa took 40 of the 48 penalty minutes doled out, including six infractions for 36 minutes assessed to Jacob Harris, who was given an automatic game misconduct at 10:16 of the third period after incurring a pair of 10-minute misconducts. The Redmen went 1-for-5 on the power-play, while Ottawa replied on one of four chances.
McGill (5-2) travels to Trois-Rivieres (5-3) on Wednesday, Nov. 2 before hosting the Laurentian Voyageurs (4-3-1) on Nov. 5. The Gee-Gees, who rejoined the league after a two-year suspension, dropped to 1-6-1. They will host Concordia (6-1) on Nov. 5.
REDMEN RAP: Talbot-Tassi was in on all three McGill goals, upping his season stats to 1-7-8 in seven contests. Last year, as a freshman, he was the second-highest scoring rearguard in the nation with an 11-27-38 record in 28 games... Pompei, a senior, picked up two assists and now ranks third in the OUA scoring race with a 2-11-13 record in seven contests.
