Capers outlast Sea-Hawks in tight game

(St. John's, NL) – The Cape Breton Capers (4-1) defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks (2-3) 76-71 at The Field House on Saturday night in the first game of the weekend series.

The Sea-Hawks jumped out to a first quarter lead with Sydney Stewart supplying 10 points, which gave the home side an early 17-8 advantage.  The Capers would battle back with Alison Keough dropping 7 points, which helped bring the visitors within two points to close out the quarter.

Sydney Ezekiel came alive in the second quarter for the home side, putting up 8 points to give the Sea-Hawks a 36-27 lead at the break.

Cape Breton used the halftime to regroup and looked like a completely different team to begin the second half.  The Capers picked the Sea-Hawks up with full court pressure, which forced the Sea-Hawks to make five turnovers and limited the team to 10 total points.  Cape Breton would score 23 in the quarter, which put them in front of the Sea-Hawks 50-46.

The teams exchanged leads throughout the final quarter of play, but Cape Breton would prove to be too strong down the stretch and the Sea-Hawks couldn't find an answer on the defensive end for Alison Keough.  Keough led all scorers with 29 points, while also pulling down 12 rebounds.  Colleen Keane also chipped in with 19 points for the Capers.

Sydney Stewart was the high-scorer for the Sea-Hawks finishing with 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals.  Sydney Ezekiel had a strong game, finishing with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals in the loss.

The teams are back in action once again tomorrow with the tip-off scheduled for 12:00pm at The Field House.
