Huskies top Mounties 5-1

The Saint Mary's University Huskies rolled to a 5-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday, January 7 at Alumni Arena in Halifax, NS. The win gives the Huskies an 11-1-2 record on the season and they sit second in the AUS. The loss drops the Mounties to 3-12-1 and they sit in sixth in the AUS standings.

 

Nicole Blanche (Dunville, NF) (3), Mary Worndl (Lunenburg, NS) (5), Laura Polak (Bedford, NS), Siobhan Birch (Mississauga, ON) (5) and Sarah Rumbell (Toronto, ON) (1) scored the goals for the Huskies.

 
 

Rebecca Weagle made 11 saves to pick up the win and move her record to 3-0 this season.

 

Heather Richards (St Anthony, NL) (3) responded for the Mounties.

 

Lindsay Wray made 27 saves in the loss, as her record falls to 0-2.

 

After a scoreless first period the Huskies blew the game open in the second. Blanche scored just 0:44 into the frame and goals from Worndl, Polak and Birch made it 4-0 after 40 minutes.

 

Richards got the Mounties on the board 0:19 into the third but they could not find a way past Weagle again.

 

At 3:56 of the third Rumbell scored her first career AUS goal. Gemma MacDonald (Blooming Point, PE) poked the puck to Kate Barber (Aurora ON) in the Mounties zone, Barber fired on goal and Rumbell crashed the net to bury the rebound and seal the win.

 

Shots were 32-12 overall for the Huskies.

The Mounties will host the StFX X-Women on Saturday, January 14 in Sackville, NB, while the Huskies host the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus on Sunday, January 8 at Alumni Arena in Halifax, NS.
