Box Score The Manitoba Bisons hung on and upset the #4 Brandon Bobcats with a 3-2 (25-18, 25-20, 21-25, 19-25, 15-10) victory in a thrilling men's volleyball game at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus) on Saturday, Nov. 16.

The Bisons (4-4) won the first two sets of the game but Brandon (4-4) came back to win the following two. For the second straight night, the two teams would need a fifth set to decide a winner. In the final frame, Manitoba was in complete control and took the weekend sweep from the nationally ranked Bobcats.

It is the fifth consecutive conference game that the Bisons have played all five sets. Manitoba's Adam DeJonckheere led all players with 20 kills. Sam Tuivai led the Bobcats with 16.

"I hate to say it but we are almost becoming good at rebounding after losing the fourth set," said Bisons head coach Cam Johnson. "They believe in each other and that goes a long way."

Manitoba stormed out of the gates in the first set, going up 16-8 heading into the technical timeout. The Bisons would withstand a late Bobcats charge and ride their early lead to a 25-18 set victory. DeJonckheere recorded six kills in the set for the home side.

Manitoba continued to roll in the second. They scored the set's first four points and began on an 8-2 run, leaving the Bobcats bench flustered. Brandon would recover and reel off a long stretch of points to bring it within two but once again, the rally came too late and the Bisons would take the set, 25-20. Manitoba never once relinquished their lead in either of the first two sets.

With the game slipping away, the Bobcats came out with a 7-3 start to the third set but the Bisons battled back to tie it. Troubles with the serve would hurt Manitoba in the frame and Brandon jumped ahead after the midway point. They didn't look back and took the set 25-21. Tuivai had four kills in the set for the visitors.

The fourth set belonged to the Bobcats from start to finish. They kept the Bisons on the outside the entire set and would tie the match at two sets apiece when Sam White's attack was blocked by Manitoba at the net and landed wide of the boundary. The visitors had a 40% attack percentage in the set.

In the fifth, the Bisons came out looking like the team that won the first two sets. They grabbed a 6-2 lead in the set when Devren Dear made a great play at the net to put the momentum back on the Manitoba sideline. Then on a big point in the set with the Bobcats inching back in it, Brandon's attack went wide and the Bisons went ahead 11-7. On match point, Kevin Falconer buried one in the Bobcats backcourt and Manitoba earned the weekend sweep.

Both teams continue their conference schedules next weekend. Manitoba will hit the road and take on the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday, Nov. 22 in their first of two games on the weekend. Meanwhile, Brandon will return home to take on Mount Royal starting Friday.
