OSHAWA, Ont. – As the OUA playoff race heats up,
Mateo Marques' (Burlington, Ont.) first goal of the season was huge on Saturday as it lifted the UOIT men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs.
The three points put the Ridgebacks three points back of the Nipissing Lakers heading into Sunday's match against the same Lakers squad. Currently, UOIT holds the sixth and final playoff spot in the OUA east with a 3-6-0 record.
His goal against the Voyageurs came in the 13th minute of a physical contest that resulted in 11 cards between the two squads. Only three of those were given to the Ridgebacks.
UOIT held their lead for the final 78 minutes as
Nicholas Miller (Oshawa, Ont.) made three saves to earn the clean sheet, his second of the season and 10th since joining the Ridgebacks. He is now one back of tying
Travis Martin as UOIT's all-time clean sheet leader.
Sunday afternoon's match kicks off at 2:15 p.m. at Vaso's Field.
Overall Record: 3-9-0 (W-L-D)
Conference Record: 3-6-0
Next match: Sunday, Sept. 30 vs. Nipissing Lakers • 2:15 p.m. – Vaso's Field
