Lanzarotta powers Gryphons to 3-2 win over Queens

Jenna Lanzarotta (Mississauga) scored two goals for the Gryphon women's hockey team, leading them to a 3-2 win over Queens on home ice this afternoon at the Gryphon Centre. Gryphon first year goalie Stephanie Nehring(Oshawa, Ont.) played outstanding turning away 30 shots for her first OUA career win.  In the loss, Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) made 13 saves.

Queens took the early lead with a goal from Alex Cieslowski (Oakville, Ont.) with assists going to Brittany and Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.).  Queens started the push early scoring the goal only three minutes into the game, on a two-on-one breakaway where Morgan McHaffie made a pass to Chieslowski who chipped the puck past the Gryphon goaltender.

After some great goaltending by first year Gryphon tender, Stephanie Nehring which kept the Gryphons in the contest, Guelph finally got on the scoreboard at 16:45 with a powerplay goal from rookie Jessica Pinkerton with assists being credited to Erin Small and Michelle Sabourin. Shots on net were 11-5 for Queens following the end of the first period.

Guelph picked up the pace in the second period, dominating in puck position and their hard work paid off as Jenna Lanzarotta scored the go-ahead-goal at the 11:07 minute mark to give the Gryphons a 2-1 lead.  In a scramble in front of the net, Lanzarotta was able to score a power play goal with assists going to Tamara Bell and Leigh Shilton.

In the third period Jenna Lanzarotta scored her second goal of the night at nine minutes in, with assists from Kim Wong and Jessica Pinkerton to give the Gryphons a 3-1 lead. Lanzarotta, making use of her speed, hustled to the net and shoveled the puck top-shelf from in close.

The Queens offence would succeed to score again, as Shawna Griffin would round the back of the Gaels net, pass to Alana Smith (Aurora, Ont.) who would shoot the puck in the left pocket for the goal, with two mintues left on the clock.

The Gryphons are back in action at the Gryphon Centre tomorrow afternoon when they face the UOIT Ridgebacks at 2:00 p.m.
