(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - The UNB Varsity Reds women's basketball team picked up a big four-point victory over the CBU Capers, winning 67-52 in front of 423 spectators at the Richard J. Currie Center.
For the Varsity Reds, who went in ranked fifth in the AUS, it's their first win in four games. It's the first loss in five games for the second-ranked Capers.
The game got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but some consistency at the free throw line put the Varsity Reds up 14-9.
The Capers pushed back in the second quarter and drew to within two points. A couple of three-pointers from Laura Kaye and Colleen Daly and some good shooting from Nicole LaFleur along with solid defence led by Rachel Cleary kept UNB ahead as they went into halftime leading 29-18.
From that point on, the Varsity Reds would hold on and extend their lead, eventually taking the game 67-52.
Leading scoring for the Varsity Reds was Laura Kaye with 20 points. Rachel Cleary was named the Subway player of the game with 11 rebounds including six defensive rebounds.
Leading scoring for the Capers was Colleen Keane with 15 points. Alison Keough also made her presence felt out on the court with 10 rebounds.
UNB head coach Jeff Speedy says taking this game was a good start to the eight-point weekend.
"It's nice to pick up this win going into another four-point game against UPEI tomorrow," Speedy said. "But that's going to be another tough one, so we've really gotta make sure we come out there ready to play."
The Varsity Reds play next when they travel to UPEI on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m.
The Capers play next when they host UPEI on Friday, Jan. 31, at the same time.
