LONDON, Ont. - 2011 OUA female runner of the year Tamara Jewett opened the season with a bang on Saturday, winning the women’s title at the 38th annual Western International at Thames Valley Golf Course in London, Ont.
Jewett (Toronto) dominated the 5km race, finishing in 17:39, a full six seconds ahead of McMaster’s Lindsay Carson (17:45).
Rookie runner Kelly Hennessy was the next Varsity Blue to cross the finish line, placing 13th with a time of 18:31. Her sister, Colleen was not far behind, finishing 22nd overall in a time of 18:55. Erin Ready (19:43) and Rosa Serafini (19:51) also placed among the top 50 runners, helping U of T’s women to a fifth place finish.
Toronto’s men placed eighth overall and were led by fourth-year veteran Ethan Davenport. The Aurora, Ont., native was the 13th runner to cross the 8km finish line, in a time of 26:05.
Gavin Hamilton finished 25th in a time of 26:24,
while Alex Belluzzo (26:35), Zain Ahmed (26:59) and Jake Woloshyn
(27:57) also raced for the Blues.
