Western Mustangs assistant coach and former team captain (2004) Brandon Laan decided at the last minute to hop into the race to help keep our boys honest in putting out a decent effort. Little did they know he would blast off at the gun and put the hammer down throughout the race, leading the few brave through the first kilometer in 2:55.
Western's Ryan Armstrong was the sole man in the field of 137 runners who hung on to the fleeting coach who had just returned from winning last Sunday's San Jose California Half Marathon in 67 minutes.
Armstrong finished second today with a career best 4km time of 18:59, the 10th fastest all-time for a Mustang on the Gibbons Park course.

McMaster Marauders @ Mustang Open
The McMaster Marauders men's cross-country team had a strong second place finish at the annual Mustangs Open Cross Country Meet at Gibbons Park today.
The race was the first for Marauder swimmer-turned-runner Andrew Bysice, and he didn't disappoint. Bysice ran the 6km course in 19:42, finishing at a solid fourth place. Rookies Eric Barry and Duke Lloyd finished sixth and tenth, showing strong improvements from their previous races.
On the women's side, Rachel Lamb ran a strong race finishing sixth despite being part of a group that went off course. The Marauders didn't field a complete women's team.
The men's and women's cross country teams return to action October 16 in Rochester.

Windsor Lancers @ Disney World Cross Country Classic
he No. 2 ranked Lancer Men's Cross Country team showed their magic at Disney World on Saturday as they captured their second straight Disney World Cross Country Classic title in Orlando, Florida.
The Lancers dominated the competition by placing seven runners in the top 10, including nine Lancers receiving coveted "Mickey" medals for finishing in the top 15.
The 8km course, which wound through the Wide World of Sports complex, was covered in a very fast winning time of 24:33, by 3rd year student Anthony Berkis for the individual title. This is the second week in a row that Berkis has paced his teammates to a team victory.
Matt Walters also had a fine performance for the Lancers, picking up the individual bronze medal by finishing the race in a time of 24:39. Also scoring for Windsor were Dave Weston (5th in 24:48), Andrew Aguanno (6th in 24:57), and Lionel Sanders (7th in 24:59).
Other Lancer men placing in the top 15 places in the field of 186 Southeastern U.S. College and University runners were: Nick Walters (9th), Paul Janikowski (10th), Andrew deGroot (13th) and Adam Kellar (14th).
On the womens' side, the Lancers placed seventh overall in the field of 25 teams. Leading the way was Ashley Kellam, who completed the 5km course in 18:40 seconds to finish 22nd out of 221 competitors. Other scorers for Windsor included, Laura Gill (43rd in 19:06), Carly Gill (47th in 19:16), Amina Oumesrour (51st in 19:19) and Alyssa Thrasher (53rd in 19:20).
The Lancer Women will complete their pre-season at home next Saturday at the St. Clair College Windsor Invitational at Malden Park, while the Lancer men will compete next Saturday in Ohio at Bowling Green State University's Falcon Invitational.
