QUARTERFINAL #4 CIS women’s volleyball championship, presented by SGI CANADA: Laval dominates McMaster

REGINA (CIS) – L’Université Laval Rouge et Or triumphed over the McMaster University Marauders in a 3-0 decision Friday night at the Centre of Kinesiology, Health and Science in Regina, during the quarterfinals of the CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship.

In a three-set sweep, the RSEQ champion and fourth-seeded Laval dominated the OUA champion and No. 5 seed McMaster (25-15, 25-20, 25-19) in the last quarterfinal match of the evening to solidify their spot in Saturday’s semifinals at the CKHS.

The Rouge et Or squad will face the top seed and defending CIS champion University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at 8 p.m. CST Saturday for a ticket to the championship final. The game will be broadcast live on www.CIS-SIC.tv.

Esther Gilbert headed the team in kills with 13 and had a match- high five service aces. Laval’s defence was formidable, with Valérie Lemay Joany Leblanc-Bellemare, Émilie Ducharme giving the Rouge et Or an impressive total of 18, 17, and 15 digs respectively. Alyssa Fields-Bouchard added 11 kills and hit .321 in the win.

Sophie Bukovec had the only double-digit kills total for the Marauders with 10. Carly Heath topped her team with 14 digs, while Joanna Jedrzejwska added 11.

The loss for the Marauders sets-up a match against the hometown University of Regina Cougars in the 3 p.m. CST consolation semifinals Saturday. Video and live stats will be available at www.CIS-SIC.tv.

The hitting attack remained strong for Laval throughout the match as they it had 39 kills and hit .190 as a team, while McMaster hit .079 and accumulated 30 kills.
