REGINA (CIS) – The Trinity Western University Spartans swept the Ottawa Gee-Gees (25-14, 25-22, 25-15) in Saturday’s 2014 CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship consolation semifinal action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport in Regina.
The Trinity Western Spartans bounced back from their loss Friday to Dalhousie University with a straight-sets victory (25-14, 25-22, 25-15) over the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees in Saturday’s first match at the CKHS in Regina.
With the win, the Spartans advance to the fifth-place game where
they will meet the winner of the other consolation semifinal
between the host Regina Cougars and the McMaster Marauders. The
fifth-place match is scheduled for Sunday, 1 p.m. CST, live on www.CIS-SIC.tv.
Sophie Carpentier had another stellar game for the Spartans,
registering 14 kills, nine digs and a match-high three service
aces. Alicia Perrin chipped in with nine kills for TWU. Kristen
Moncks paced the Spartans defense with 12 digs, while Lauren Moncks
had nine digs of her own to go along with 27 assists and three
service aces.
Kelsie English was the kill leader for the Gee-Gees with 10, followed by Kaly Soro and Myriam English with seven each. Kelsie English also had 12 digs and a team-high two service aces. Kira Tome added eight digs and 22 assists for Ottawa.
Ottawa’s season is now complete; the OUA finalists and No. 7 seed in the tournament finished 0-2 and did not win a set this weekend at the CKHS.
The first set was close at the technical timeout, with Trinity Western leading 16-12. The Spartans went on a strong run to close the set, scoring nine of the last 11 points and winning the opener 25-14.
The second set was hard-fought, with teams trading points until a Carly Hamilton kill gave Trinity Western a two point advantage. An attack error from Ottawa then closed the set 25-22 and gave TWU a 2-0 lead in the match.
Ottawa jumped out to an 8-3 lead early in the third set, prompting a Trinity Western timeout. The Spartans rebounded following the break in play, taking a 16-11 lead at the technical timeout. A Sophie Carpentier service ace and Casie Gano kill ended the set 25-15 as the Spartans put the Gee-Gees away in straight sets.
The Gee-Gees hit .066 on the match with 27 kills, while the Spartans hit .225 with 37 kills.
