QUEBEC CITY (CIS) – The closest of the three quarter-final matches of the CIS women’s soccer championship required extra time. The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, Canada West finalists, worked hard to overcome a stubborn Memorial Sea-Hawks side 2-1 at Stade TELUS-Université Laval, late Thursday afternoon.
After a quiet first half the game came alive from then on. Cascades forward Danica Kump’s (Surrey, B.C.) goal in the 50th minute looked to be the winner until Sea-Hawks’s Hannah Rivkin (St. John’s) managed to equalize in the 83rd minute.
Having exchanged chances within the finally 10 minutes the game needed Carley Radomski’s (Langley, B.C.) 103rd minute strike to decide who would advance.
With the victory the Cascades await either the Western University Mustangs or Laval Rouge et Or in the second semi-final matchup on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Memorial faces off against the loser for the second consolation semi-final tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
Cascades coach Robert Giesbrecht was happy with his team’s effort. “At this time of the year it's not a matter of how you win but if you win. I'm proud of my team, they worked hard,” said Giesbrecht. “I think they fought through the frustration of not be able to score more goals. We had a lot of chances but we were a bit sloppy in front of the goal and almost paid the price for it."
Sea-Hawks coach Walt Mavin on his team’s performance in a tight game. “We battled right until the end. You can't ask for anything more than that. We lost one of our central defenders early in the game and that was tough, but I thought we adjusted well. It came down to them finishing their chances. We created our own, but didn't finish."
The best scoring chance of the first half came early. After only three minutes of play Fraser Valley’s Monika Levarsky (Surrey, B.C.) came close after a good shot that Memorial Sea-Hawks’s keeper Hannah Noseworthy (Mount Pear, Nfld.) deflected off the crossbar. With the rebound coming back into play Cascades’s Kump just had to place the ball into the net, but missed the target firing high.
The rest of the half was dominated by Fraser Valley, but no clear chances materialized from the possession.
As the second half got underway the Cascades managed to open the scoring in the 50th minute, Kump redeeming herself with a low placed shot into the bottom right corner.
Fraser Valley appeared to be headed to victory when in the 83rd minute Rivkin placed a perfect shot into the top right corner levelling the score. Levarsky came close to putting the Cascades through in stoppage time with a breakaway chance, but Noseworthy came up with a huge stop.
In extra time the goal that made the difference came in the 13th minute. Controlling possession Radomski lobbed a shot over everyone, including the keeper, to make it 2-1.
The Sea-Hawks managed to create two great scoring chances, but Cascades Kayla Klim (Burnaby, B.C.) kept the scoreline intact until the final whistle.
