TORONTO (CIS) – The RSEQ champion Montreal Carabins defeated the Western Mustangs 2-1 in the first quarter-final of the 2013 CIS women’s soccer championship on Thursday afternoon at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Centre.
The Carabins have earned a spot in Saturday’s first championship semifinal at 1:30 p.m. and will take on the winner of the quarter-final featuring the Canada West champion Alberta Pandas and RSEQ silver medalist Laval Rouge et Or. It marks the fifth time in the past six years that Montreal has advanced to the CIS final four, with Montreal still vying for their first national title in program history.
The Mustangs, who appear in their first CIS championship in a decade, move to the consolation side of the draw and will take on the loser of the Alberta-Laval quarter-final, Friday at 1:30 p.m. The 2013 OUA silver medalists are now 1-9-4 in their seven appearances, with their lone win coming over Saint Mary’s in 2002.
“It was a tale of two halves,” said Montreal head coach Kevin McConell. “We came out way too hesitant in the first half and the second half was a different story. For us we need to come out the way we did in the second half and play a full 90 minutes like that.”
After a scoreless first half, third-year Carabins midfielder Kim Brûlé opened the scoring in the 50th minute. The Trois-Rivières, Que., native centred a wide-angled shot, which bounced off the far post and into the net.
Nine minutes later, Montreal’s Constance De Chantal Dumont (Saint-Alexandre, Que.) was taken down in the penalty area and fellow second-year midfielder Laurianne Garrant-Saine (Montreal) made no mistake, sending a booming shot into the bottom left corner of the net on the penalty shot
The Mustangs cut the deficit to one just six minutes later as third-year defender Samantha Taylor of London, Ont., kicked in a rebound off a Becca Jefferson (Belmont, Ont.) corner kick. Western was unable to find the back of the net again and Montreal came away with the win.
“I thought we battled hard,” said CIS coach of the year and Mustangs bench boss Martin Painter. “I don’t think it was our best game of the year. I think we could have played with a little bit more belief and a little bit more confidence. It came down to a couple of unfortunate goals but we fought back to get into the game and we came up a little short.”
