TORONTO (CIS) – Second-year forward Léa Chastenay-Joseph of Donnacona, Que., scored twice in the last seven minutes of regulation time to lead the Laval Rouge et Or to a 2-0 victory over the Western Mustangs in consolation semi-final action on Day 2 of the 2013 CIS women’s soccer championship at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Centre, Friday afternoon.
Laval advances to the consolation final for the second time in the past four years, after claiming the fifth-place spot in the 2010 tournament at UPEI. Sunday at 11 a.m., they will face the winner of today’s second consolation semifinal, featuring the OUA champions Laurier Golden Hawks and host Toronto Varsity Blues.
In the only previous meeting between the two teams at the CIS tournament, in 2002, Laval had defeated Western 1-0 in extra time for a program-best bronze-medal finish.
“We knew it was going to be hard game,” said Laval assistant coach Marie-Pier Bilodeau. “We didn’t play an emotional game in the first half, I think that was our problem. There was no emotion or life and we told them that they had to put their heart in it and I think that’s what we were able to do in the second half.”
Chastenay-Joseph scored the eventual game-winner in the 83rd minute when she received a through ball from Mélissande Guy of Quebec City and sent a wide-angled shot past Western goalkeeper Tori Edgar of Oakville, Ont., and into the net.
She added her second of the game in the 90th minute, receiving a pass from goalkeeper Joëlle Morasse, also a Quebec City native, and sliding the ball into the open mesh.
The two teams traded chances 20 minutes earlier. Chastenay-Joseph came down the right side of the field and sent the ball just wide of the far post in the 66th minute. Less than a minute later Western’s Tianna Deluzio of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., had a clear shot on net and sent it over the cross bar. The Mustangs had a couple more shots in the ensuing minutes but to no avail.
The OUA silver medalist Mustangs cap off their 2013 campaign with a respectable 13-3-5 record through the regular season and playoffs.
“It was a very successful season,” said Western’s Martin Patiner, the 2013 CIS coach of the year. “We came out today and competed well. We conceded a couple of unfortunate goals late in the game but through the 90 minutes we did a lot of positive things. I think we had a much better performance than yesterday and the result didn’t go our way.
