SEMIFINAL #2 2010 CIS championship: Laurier wins in overtime to advance to Final

By UPEI sports information

CHARLOTTETOWN (CIS) – A complete team effort highlighted by two overtime goals from All-Canadian Alyssa Lagonia carried the Laurier Golden Hawks to a tense 2-0 victory over the Montréal Carabins on Saturday evening in Charlottetown. The win propels the Hawks into Sundays 2010 CIS Women’s Soccer  Final against fellow OUA conference contender Queens Gaels.

The bronze medal match up will be the Motréal Carabins and Fraser Valley Cascades at 10:00 am (AST)

Following a couple of quality chances by the Hawks in the early going the teams battled until the 70th minute before Laurier began to take control of the game. Not coincidently this was just after All-Canadian midfielder Tania Pedron re-entered the game. Pedron left the field with 8 minutes remaining in the 1st half with an apparent hamstring injury.

In the last 15 minutes of regulation the Hawks had numerous chances, sparked by several quality crosses from Heather Malizia. Montreal defenders denied two apparent sure goals in the 85th minute, one on a clearance by Claudiane Tremblay and a 2nd when a Carabins defender made a save on the goal line as the Hawks exerted pressure to the end.

Lagonia made no mistake staking the Hawks to a 1-0 lead early in overtime burying a penalty shot to the keeper’s right. Shortly thereafter Montreal dug themselves a deeper hole as they had a player sent off with a red card.

Laurier continued to apply pressure with Lagonia sealing the victory, hammering home a perfect setup from 2nd team All-Canadian Ali McKee. “I’m ecstatic” beamed Lagonia. “We played so well, now we get ready for the final”.

Neither team has won a Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy in over fifteen years.  Tomorrow’s final will be a rematch of last week’s OUA Championship which Laruier had won.
