Each team had a number of scoring opportunities in the opening period. Defender Marie-Hélèn Suc (Quebéc) had a chance early on for Carabins, as the puck bounced out to her in the slot and she had an open net but McGill goaltender Taylor Salisbury (Surrey, BC) slid across to make save.

The Martlets had a few shots on net during an early power play opportunity but Carabins netminder Catherine Herron (Chambly, QC) held her ground. Montreal successfully held off a Martlets 5-on-3 power play chance for 56 seconds midway through the period.

The Carabins then had their own 5-on-3 opportunity where they moved the puck around but had no solid shots on net as McGill weas strong on the penalty kill.

Forward Alessandra Lind-Kenny (Calgary, AB) had a good scoring chance on net for the Martlets with just over 5 minutes left in period but was stopped by Herron.

The Carabins had one of their best chances of the period as Amanda Lalande (Montréal) brought the puck up ice on a 2 on 1 and made a nice pass over to Kim Dechenes (Saint-Quentin, QC) whose shot on net was stopped by Salisbury.

Alyssa Cecere (Brossard, QC) was close to notching the first goal of the game for the Martlets but her shot sailed just high of the Carabins net. Herron also held her ground on a 2-on-1 chance by Lind-Kenny and Rebecca Martindale.

The Martlets closed out the opening 20 minutes of play with a 10-6 shot advantage. The defending CIS national champions came out firing in the second period as well.

Captain Vanessa Davidson (Kirkland, QC) had a good scoring chance for McGill as she brought the puck up the wing and all the way to the net for a shot on goal. Cecere had a shot from point blank range and was stopped by Herron, not once but twice as she followed up on her own rebound.

McGill exerted continued pressure in the second period and spent a lot of time in the Carabins end of the ice, continuing to pepper Herron with shots, doing everything they could to put the puck in the net.

Montreal only registered one shot on net up until 15 minute mark of the period when they were on the power play.
The tournament top seed finally solved Herron as CIS first team all-Canadian Cathy Chartrand Lac Nominingue, QC) tipped in a shot from the point by forward Jordanna Peroff (Keswick, ON).

The Martlets outshot their QSSF rivals 11-2 in the second period, taking the 1-0 lead into intermission after 40 minutes of play.

The McGill lead didn’t hold for long, however, as Montreal forward Catherine Martin-Guay (St-Jean-sur-Richileau, QC) scored on the power play 6:23 into the third period, making history by scoring the first ever goal for the Carabins at a CIS national championship. Martin-Guay deflected in a shot from the point by captain Stéphanie Daneau (Drummondville, QC).

McGill’s Amy Soberano (Toronto) almost scored the go-ahead goal on the power play as she jumped on a loose rebound, but Herron continued to hold strong in the Carabins net, holding off the Martlet attack until the final buzzer sounded. The Martlets again held the shot advantage in the period at 12-2 and a 33-10 margin after regulation.

McGill tallied another 6 shots in overtime before Martindale popped in the game winner, scoring high over the glove side shoulder of Herron.

Herron earned Player of the Game honors for her 38 save effort while McGill defender Cathy Chartrand got the nod for the Martlets.

The Martlets (1-0) will now rest on Friday and advance to play the No. 4 seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies on Saturday night at 7:30 pm (AST). The Carabins (0-1) will meet the Huskies Friday at 7:30 pm (AST).
