SEMIFINAL #1: Windsor One Step Closer to Re-Appearance at Nationals

Courtesy of University of Ottawa sports information

OTTAWA (CIS) - It was a game budding with potential – two of the top five offenses in the country, the defending national champion Lancers facing the defending national bronze medalist Capers in a do-or-die match with a potential berth to the national championships on the line. After an exciting and deciding fourth quarter it would be the Lancers who proved to have the energy and drive in tonight’s 83-70 win over the Capers.

The first quarter opened with the high tempo you would expect from two teams that have tasted success at the national level. But along with the energy came an equally high number of turnovers by both teams, keeping the score close with a slim two point margin in Windsor’s favour after ten minutes of play.

Windsor opened the second quarter with 14 unanswered points, setting themselves up with a comfortable double digit lead over the Capers, which they would maintain deep into the second half.

After a notable lag in the momentum in the third quarter, the Capers regained their fire for the final frame giving their fans in Montpetit Hall a reason to cheer. With their three-point perimeter shooting suddenly finding its mark, the Capers, led by Cassie Cooke chipped away at the Lancers’ lead to come within four points in the final four minutes.

Though tested, Windsor found an answer and emerged from the Caper’s fourth quarter flurry with a double digit lead once again, claiming the win thanks large in part to ace free throw shooting from Jessica Clemencon down the stretch.

Windsor dominated the boards throughout the game, with 52 total rebounds compared to the Capers’ 32 boards. Player of the game for Windsor, Clemencon led the Lancers in scoring with a high 30 points, a number exceeded only by her 32 point performance in their earlier playoff win over Carleton.

Second in the CIS in scoring in the regular season, Cooke led the Capers comeback effort with 29 points and teammate Jahlica Kirnon chipped in for 13 points. Cooke was named player of the game for Cape Breton.

“We really focused on going out there and wanting to win. We were playing afraid to lose last Saturday [in the OUA final], and we wanted to be in attack mode [tonight], which is a mental switch,” said Lancers’ head coach Chantal Vallée. “For us it was one game at a time, we wanted to go out there and this not be our last game. We were more ourselves [tonight] and we’re happy to be playing tomorrow.”

The Lancers will face either Fraser Valley or Ottawa in tomorrow’s CIS East Regional championship at 6:00 p.m. to hopefully solidify their berth to the 2012 CIS Championships.

SEMIFINAL #2: Gee-Gees Ready for Nationals with Win over Fraser Valley

Courtesy of University of Ottawa sports information

OTTAWA (CIS) – Banking another win over national competition with tonight’s 75-69 victory over number eight nationally ranked Fraser Valley Cascades, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees continue to prove they’re ready for the CIS Final 8 next weekend.

With their ticket to the 2012 CIS Championship already locked in with last week’s OUA Championship win, the Gee-Gees took to their bench early in the game. But the Gee-Gee rookies had no trouble proving that they’re a key part of the national calibre team. Led by Maddie Stephen (Toronto, Ont.) on the boards and Ariane Lachance-Scantland (Gatineau, Qué.) at the perimeter, the Gee-gees began building their lead.

Off back-to-back treys from second-year Tatiana Hanlan (Gatineau, Qué.) and fifth-year Bess Lennox (Ottawa, Ont.), the Gee-Gees opened their second quarter scoring drive, extending their lead to the double digits before Fraser Valley knew what hit them. But Fraser Valley was just getting warmed up, and with an even scoring push from their entire starting line, the Cascades were back within four points of the home-court Gee-Gees by half.

It was a battle of two well-matched teams in the third quarter, as Fraser Valley pulled within one point of the home-court Gee-Gees. But that would be as close as the Cascades would come, as the Gee-Gees remained solid to rebuild their lead throughout the fourth.

In the last five minutes, Tessa Klassen’s three-pointer put Fraser Valley within six points of the Gee-Gees, but the Cascades’ inability to produce on subsequent drives and solid rebounding from Lennox would leave the Gee-Gees in position for the win, ending any further Fraser Valley playoff hopes.

“The game plan was to try and play everyone in the first half and see where we were,” said Gee-Gees’ head coach Andy Sparks, “Unfortunately, it was a little closer than we wanted it to be. We got up 15 and it would’ve been nice if we had pushed through a little bit better. But they were a very good team and made plays; full credit to Fraser Valley in that one.”

Fifth-year Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.) came on fire in the second half, sinking 16 points and securing nine rebounds by the buzzer to earn her player of the game honours. Fourth-year Jenna Gilbert (Ottawa, Ont.) also chipped in 15 points, and Lennox 13 points, 11 rebounds.

Fraser Valley put forth a solid team effort on the scoring front, with 15 points, seven assists from player of the game Kayli Sartori, 14 points from Klassen and 11 points from both Aieisha Luyken and Nicole Wierks.

With the Gee-Gees’ win tonight and Windsor’s win earlier this evening, the Lancers have now secured their berth to the CIS Championships regardless of the result in tomorrow’s 6:00 p.m. CIS East Regional championship. All that’s left on the line tomorrow is pride and seeding for both teams heading into nationals.

SEMIFINAL #1: Brock upsets host Huskies, off to final

Courtesy of University of Saskatchewan sports information

SASKATOON (CIS) - The host and No. 2 seed University of Saskatchewan Huskies fell to the No. 3 seed Brock University Badgers 66-62 on Friday night in the CIS West Regional Semifinal at the Physical Activity Complex in Saskatoon.

With the win the Brock University Badgers advance to the tournament final and will face No. 1 seeded University of Regina Cougars. The final is set for 7 p.m. Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex in Saskatoon.

Nicole Rosenkranz, an OUA First Team West Division All-Star, led the Badgers with 18 points and seven rebounds. Two other Badgers tallied double digs with Samantha deJong netting 13 and Emily McKay tallying 10.

Katie Miyazaki led the Huskies scoring a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Canada West rookie sensation Dalyce Emmerson also recorded a double-double scoring 16 points and collecting seven rebounds.

The Badgers used a strong defensive game to come away with the victory on the Huskies home floor. Late in the fourth quarter with the Huskies trailing by two points the Badgers were able to get a big block on the defensive end and Emily McKay was able to convert the transition bucket. That sequence would give the Badgers a four point lead at 61-57 and that would be all Brock would need to pull out the win.

Brock put together a strong defensive game plan limiting the Huskies offense. Brock forced the Huskies to commit 20 turnovers and they capitalized on their opportunities scoring 15 points off turnovers.

Badgers head coach Si Khounviseth knew they would have to execute a strong game plan in order to get the win.

“We knew it was going to be a tough team to play here and we knew we needed to execute and I thought we did an excellent job executing our game plan tonight,” said Khounviseth.

Saskatchewan was unable to establish a strong half court offence due to the aggressive Badgers defence. When the Huskies did have opportunities they failed to take advantage shooting just 38 percent from the floor.

“Credit Brock - they really brought a lot of pressure that we didn’t handle very well,” said Huskie head coach Lisa Thomaidis. “In the first half, we couldn’t stop the things we talked about stopping and we turned the ball over from their pressure.”

The two teams fought hard in a tightly contested opening 20 minutes. There were 10 lead changes in the opening half, which saw the teams tied at 28 entering the halftime break.

Out of the halftime break, Brock was able to build a small lead outscoring the Huskies 8-2 in the opening minutes. The Huskies would not go away and clawed their way back taking the lead 42-41 with under three minutes left in the third quarter. But once the lead change and Brock stormed back outscoring the Huskies 10-5 in the final three minutes of the third quarter to lead 51-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was just as tight as the previous three with the Badgers taking a 59-57 lead into the final two minutes of play. Brock maintained their stifling defence and made key free throws down the stretch to close out the victory.

SEMIFINAL #2: Cougars to meet Brock in final

SASKATOON (CIS) - The No. 1 seed University of Regina Cougars downed the No. 4 seed Concordia University Stingers 73-60 on Friday night in the CIS West Regional Semifinal at the Physical Activity Complex in Saskatoon.

With the win the Cougars advance to the CIS West Regional Final against the Brock University Badgers. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex in Saskatoon.

Regina was led by a trio offensively. Canada West MVP Joanna Zalesiak finished just shy of a triple double registering 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Forward Lindsay Ledingham added another 15 points and guard Michelle Clark tallied 14 for the Cougars.

Kaylah Barrett was the spark plug for the Stingers scoring a game-high 34 and nine rebounds in 36 minutes of play. Anne-Marie Prophete also reached double digits for the Stingers with 11 points.

The Cougars went on a 10-2 run in the opening five minutes of play and never looked back en route to their semifinal victory. Regina doubled-up Concordia 16-8 by the end of the first quarter.

Concordia only scored 11 points through opening 14 minutes of the first half. The Stingers found themselves in a big hole trailing by as many as 18 points and were unable to find success from the floor shooting just 24% in the opening 20 minutes.

The Cougars conversely found a lot of success from the floor converting on 50% of their field goal attempts and went an impressive five for eight from beyond the arc.

Cougars head coach Dave Taylor was pleased with the way his team executed on both sides of the ball.

“I thought we were disciplined both offensive and defensively,” said Taylor. “We found a way to get quality shots and were also able to hold them to a low percentage offensively.”

In the second half the Stingers gave it all they could but came up short as the experience of the Cougars proved to be too much. Concordia’s young squad featuring seven first years and four second year players was unable to execute their game plan in the opening half.

“We were nervous, and it showed early,” said Stingers head coach Keith Pruden. “Credit Regina, they are a very good team and played well, we had a lot of good looks but we just couldn’t capitalize. I was very happy with the effort we put in tonight.”

Regina finished the first half with a 39-26 lead. The Cougars added another 34 points in the second half. Concordia made a small bid for the comeback scoring 23 in the final frame but it was too little too late.

The Cougars will take on the Brock University Badgers who defeated the host University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the other semifinal matchup Friday night, 66-62.

The winner of Saturday’s final will gain an automatic bid in the CIS Final 8 hosted by the University of Calgary March 16-19.
