Quebec champion Laval will face No. 6 Cape Breton Sunday at 10 a.m.
The two teams also met in last year’s consolation final, with
the Capers prevailing 67-56.
The opening quarter was all Laval as the Rouge et Or outrebounded
their OUA rivals 21-5 and ended the period on a 10-2 run for a
22-12 lead after 10 minutes. They held a 34-23 advantage at the
half and were up 47-38 after three.
In the fourth stanza, McMaster couldn’t cut the deficit to
less than nine points as Laval increased its lead to 13 points on
four occasions and was even up by 15 with 2:18 remaining following
a drive by Genois.
The Rouge et Or finished with a 60-27 advantage in rebounds and
outscored the tourney hosts 40-28 in the paint.
“Last night’s loss against Regina was a tough
one, but I am really proud how the team regrouped and showed up to
play today,” said Laval head coach Linda Marquis, whose
troops dropped a 69-54 decision to the Canada West finalists in
Friday’s quarter-final round. “Tomorrow’s
re-match versus Cape Breton gives us a little extra incentive to
win and finish fifth.”
Laval had three players in double figures in scoring led by Genois
of Cap-Santé, Que., who registered 19 points and 11 rebounds
for the double-double earning her Russell Athletics player of the
game honours for the winning side.
Nadeau of Lévis, Que., contributed with 15 points and 12
boards for the double-double, while second-team all-Canadian guard
Chanelle St-Amour of Montreal chipped in with 12 points, seven
rebounds and four assists.
Pacing the Marauders was junior Taylor Chiarot of Hamilton, who led
all scorers with 22 points. In the last game of her university
career, senior Taylor Smith, also of Hamilton and the Marauders
all-time leading scorer, registered 14 points, five assists and
four steals.
Laval finished the contest shooting 42.1% (24-for-57) from the
field while the Marauders shot just 32.4% (22-for-68) for the
game.
