ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - On day one
of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) swimming championship the
University of Toronto Varsity Blues dominated, capturing a total of
12 gold including five women and seven men.
On the women's side, Toronto captured gold in both the women's 200m
freestyle relay and 800m freestyle relay. Both the Varsity Blues
Vanessa Treasure and Paige Schultz set new OUA records. In the 200m
breaststroke, Treasure broke her old mark of 2:29.18 with a new
time of 2:28.99. In the 50m freestyle, Paige broke the old mark of
25.66 held by Western's Haley Nell in 2012 winning in a time of
25.52. Also winning gold for the Toronto were Bridget Coley in the
400m freestyle (4:12.35).
Capturing gold in the other two women's events were Guelph's Emily
Anzai (100m backstroke - 1:02.51) and Alisha Harricharan (200m
butterfly - 2:14.05).
For the men, Toronto won all seven events on day one, highlighted
by a record breaking mark in the 800m freestyle relay. The relay
team of Frank Despond, Kent Kikot, David Riley and Zack Chetrat
broke their old mark of 7:23.84 set in 2013 in a time of 7:19.59.
The Varsity Blues also won the 200m freestyle relay (1:30.83).
Capturing individual gold for the Varsity Blues were Matthew Myers
(100m backstroke - 54.70), Frank Despond (400m freestyle -
3:47.90), David Riley (200m breaststroke - 2:14.93), Zack Chetrat
(200m butterfly - 1:56.52), and Chris Manning (50m freestyle -
22.46).
Day two OUA Championship preliminaries are scheduled for 10 a.m.
