CALGARY – It was a day of domination by the UBC Thunderbirds as both their men's and women's teams took commanding leads in the overall standings on Day 2 of the 2014 Canada West swimming championship at the University of Calgary Aquatic Centre.

UBC picked up 25 of the 42 medals available Saturday, including victories in both relays and 10 of 14 gold medals. The Thunderbirds grabbed two more podium sweeps Saturday to bring their meet total to three, finishing one-two-three in both the men's 50-metre freestyle and the women's 200-metre backstroke.

With two days in the books, the UBC women hold a lead of more than 300 points over the host University of Calgary Dinos with 688 against Calgary's 367. Alberta moved in front of Lethbridge for third place midway through the evening, with the Pandas just under 100 points behind the Dinos at 270.5 while the Pronghorns sit with 208.5. Victoria, Manitoba, and Regina trail the leading foursome with 139.5, 115, and 63.5 points, respectively.

The men's race is tighter, though the Thunderbirds still sit comfortably in front with 598 points against 426 for the second-place Dinos. Again, Alberta sits third with 264 points, followed by Victoria (240), Lethbridge (225), Manitoba (126), and Regina (96).

A pair of conference records fell Saturday night, bringing the meet total to four. The first went to UBC's Coleman Allen, who picked up his second new Canada West record in as many days in the 100-metre butterfly, lowering his own mark of 52.39 set a year ago to 52.08. Two events later, Russell Wood of the Dinos lowered one of his own records, eclipsing his previous mark of 1:56.40 with a 1:56.08 swim in the 200-metre backstroke. Both Wood and Allen will have the chance to complete the stroke triple Sunday afternoon when Allen swims in the 200-metre fly while Wood competes in the 100-metre backstroke.

Thunderbirds star Savannah King captured two gold medals on the night, bringing her meet total to three after Friday's victory in the 800-metre freestyle. King won her second gold in the 200-metre backstroke, then topped the podium again in the 200-metre freestyle later in the night, edging Calgary's Lindsay Delmar by less than a tenth of a second at the end.

UBC's Sarah McLean started things off well for the Thunderbirds, out-touching teammate Rebecca Terejko by just two hundredths at the wall in the 50-metre freestyle. Luke Peddie led UBC's podium sweep in the men's 50 free with a four-hundredths margin over teammate Oleksandr Loginov, with Stefan Milosevic just behind him. Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson won gold in the women's 400 IM, while teammate Luke Reilly won the men's race in the discipline as well.

Erin Stamp brought home yet another gold for the Thunderbirds in the evening's tightest event, the women's 100-metre breaststroke. Stamp's time of 1:07.38 edged Calgary's Fiona Doyle by just four hundredths, with UBC's Tera Van Beilen just six hundredths further in arrears as the three medallists swam within a tenth of each other.

In addition to Calgary's Wood, the only other non-Thunderbirds to step atop the podium were Alberta's Kendra Chernoff, who picked up her second gold medal of the meet in the 100-metre butterfly after winning the 50-metre event Friday night; her teammate Nick Kostiuk, who captured the men's 100-metre breaststroke title; and Victoria's Keegan Zanatta, who led the way in the men's 200-metre freestyle event.

The Thunderbirds captured both 4 x 100-metre freestyle relays on the night, with the team of Sarah McLean, Fionnuala Pierse, Rebecca Terejko, and Heather MacLean cruising to a comfortable six-second win over the Dinos. The Alberta Pandas took the bronze in that event.

The men's race was tight through the first three legs before Allen pulled away from Calgary's Connor Maxey to take the gold for his teammates Peddie, Milosevic, and Sergey Holson. The Dinos finished just under a second and a half behind UBC for silver, while the Lethbridge Pronghorns squad swam an impressive race to take the bronze medal by more than four seconds over the Alberta Golden Bears.
