TORONTO (CIS) – Second-year defender Dominic Bell scored
in the 90th minute to lead the Western Mustangs to a 3-2 victory
over the UQAM Citadins in the second consolation semifinal at the
2010 CIS men’s soccer championship at Varsity Centre, Friday
night.
The Mustangs, who earned the bronze medal in their last national
tournament appearance in 2007, advance to the consolation final on
Saturday at 4:30 p.m. They will take on the defending
champion Laval Rouge et Or, who defeated the Alberta Golden Bears
4-0 in the other consolation semifinal of the day
Bell of Waterloo, Ont., received a well-placed cross from rookie
Marco Zoeger of Magdeburg, Germany and made no mistake, kicking the
ball past UQAM goalkeeper Raphael Schott for the game-winner.
“Marco made a nice move down the line and all I really needed
to do was redirect it,” said Bell after the game. “We
came in with the mindset that we wanted to play another game this
weekend so it was nice to come out with the win.”
The scoring didn’t open until the 30th minute when
Western’s Pat Mroczek was rewarded with a penalty kick after
being taken down inside the 18-yard box. The St. Catharines,
Ont., native aimed for the lower right corner and narrowly beat
Schott of Luxembourg, who was just out of reach.
Manuel Chaffort, who was named UQAM’s player of the match for
the second consecutive day, attempted to rally the troops with a
free kick deep to the right of Murdoch, but to no avail.
The Citadins evened the score just before the half when
Angoulème, France native Maxime Joly sent a free kick from
centre field that connected with Valleyfield, Que., native Maxime
Pharand inside the 6-yard box, who headed the ball into the bottom
right corner.
UQAM got the go-ahead goal in the 57th minute when Najib Addou of
Casablanca, Morocco ran down the field and chipped the ball over
Murdoch’s head and into the net.
Veteran striker Mike Sawchuk of London, Ont., evened the score in
the 69th minute as he picked up his own rebound and shot the ball
into the bottom right corner for his second of the tournament.
“We let them know the importance of finishing as well as you
can finish,” said Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco.
“When you lose that first game it’s still important to
try to win the consolation side. UQAM fought hard and it was a very
tight game but we’re happy with the win.”
